12 - TROUBLE FOR THE SELLING PLATERS Summertime, Walter ] and Boreas All Received a Boost. Three Favorites and Three Out- siders Won the Purses Yesterday. Ba:quil Was First at Odds of 25 to1 Arr zzo Too Speedy for Imp. Suin, The fast daughter of Fitzjames, the racy snd mud-reveling Summertime, with a history of her own, added another to her long list of victories at Emeryville yester- day, and caused her trainer, Al Stemler, not a little discomfitdre. She was one of seven starters in the fitth race of the day, | e six-furlong selling tour, and with the dangerous ones of the original company, Appiause and Hermanita, scratched, was an odds on choice, going to the post 1 to 4. Bhe won, of course, in a mild sortofa drive from Bookmaker George Rose entry, Torsina, second choice in the ring. She was entered to be sold for $400, and | when the numbers of the first three horses past the wire had been hoisted, Book- maker Rose left his block and calmliy sauntered down 1o the region of the judges’ stand. Trouble was scented for the winner and ber trainer, and quite a crowd braved the rain and followed in the wake of the penciler. Arriving at the stand Mr. Rose smiled at Mr. Stemler, as is his wont, and Mr. Stemler appreciating the predicament the mare had got bim into also, forgot to smile. When Judge Burke announced that the mare was entered to be sold for $400 and asked if there was any advance tue layer of odds casually remarked $1000. ~ Trainer Stemler secured & full Nelsou on the railing in frontof thestand, looked at Judge Burke appealingly and articuiated $5. A look full of sympatay and good nature overspread the leatures of Bookmaker Rose and he strode back to the betting ring without a responsive bid. Trainer Stemler had retained his charge, but he does not intend to ante yp the run- ‘money if there is 8 looph f escape. “Sior the race he protested payment. of the money on the grounds that Mr. Rose is not owner of Torsina and is thereiore not entitled to any portion;of the boost. This part of the question will be settled by the siewards. It was quite 8 day by the way for selling platers to be disturbed with -lifts.” Boreas, winner of the opening event. en- tered to be soid for $200, was bid up 10 $300 by Tom Woodford, and his owner, C. Lind, let the Eastern plunger take the brown ho! The next to fallin line was Walter J. The bay colt captured the last race at 2ddsof15 to 1, and his owner, Frank McDermott, lost the purse as_bookmaker. Joe Uilman bid the horse up from $300 to $600. Intermittent showers of rain faliing contrived to make one of the most dis. agreeable racing days imaginable, and tue attendance was very light. The track was in a sloppy condition, yet three of the six choices managed to Teach the wire fizst. The black horse Charles A went to the post a 5 to 2 favorite for the opening mile selling dash, but through Spencer’s negli- gent tactics, for he laid way out of the ran- ning, the black horse was tardy at the end, and was beaten a head by Boreas, which led from the jump. Ricardo was the run- ner up for six iurlongs. Woodchopper ran a surprisingly good race, finishing a good thiri. Cherrystone was bad.y missed ebout. The winner wasa 10 to 1 chance. Perseus was heid a very close favorite to capture the mile selling run that iollowed, | the ring holding Purser’s gelding at2 1o 5. Ransom, the second choice, led him for nearly halt the distance, when the first choice took command and won by less than a lengtn in 1:47 with little to spare. Camelia was a poor third. The black colt imp. Sain and Gene Leigh's big bay Arrezzo locked horns in the third_race over seven furlongs with | Moreno, Sweet William and Lady Hurst | as the only contenders. Arrezzo wentto the post even money with 8 to 3 a-ainst the biack fellow. The 100 to 1 shot Moreno |and William made the runnine to the stretch, wiere Cash Sloan on the favorite | gradually moved up and led Sainouta neck at the wire. Sweet William ran a fine race, being but a neck further away. | A miscellancous assoriment of platers, thirteen in all, faced the bgrrier in the next event, a five and a hali furiong scramble, with Hannetta at 2}4 10 1 ruling a slight favorite over Torpeuo. Neither secured a mark. The 25 to 1 shot Basquil, with Piggott up, rushed away in tne lead, and staying there lasted long enough to beat Roy Carruthers out a head in a hard | drive. Siegfried, a hot tip, was third. A surprise came in the final ev:nt of the aay, a mile selling affair, with a sield of | seven starting. Gene Leigh’s recent pur- | chase was hashed up a 3 to 2 favorite, but | developed as much liking for the siusny | going as a *‘yaller” dog does ior rough on Tats, finishing absolutely last. The game colt Walter J, a 15 to 1 chance in the bet- ting, took up the running from the start, and stalling off the chalienge of Caliente, | the 8 to 5 second choice, in the stretch, beat Stemler’s colt out half a length in 1:46. Thorpe, as nsual, got Monita home in third place, THE THORNTON STAKE. Thornhill, Schiller and Lobengula Will Line Up for the Journey. The Thornhill stake at four miles, with | a gross value of $4000, will be decided a: Emeryville track to-day. Of the origiual entries Schiiler, Thornhill and Lobengula | will face the starter. The latter horse 1s not apt to cut much figure, the issue ap- parently lying between the first two named horses. Outside of this event the card is a very good one. | Green B. Morris yesterday disposed of | Lobengula to Thomas H. Williams Jr., and he will be started in the Thornton stake to-day. VERY LAX BODKKEEPING, Report of Grand Jury Inv:stiga- tions in the O fice of the School Board. ] Mon:y Teken and Pard Out in Lump Sums That Leave Much to B: Guessed At The committee of the Grand Jury hav- ing in charze an investigation of the meggods under which money is spent and accounted for by the Board of Education filed its report vesterday. It discovers a remarkably loose system of bookkeeping. It says in part: The method employed in keeping a record of these transactions has been very faulty. In thie case of the teachers’ certificates and appli- tions for tuch the stubs of ihe ceriificate- books were the only source from which the in- formation could be guiued, whether or not any discrepanctes occurred duriug the last six This made it more difficult and con- time than would otherwise have Deen necessary had n brok or account been kept to suow what money had heen coliccted, from whom, and what disposition was made of it and when. This Mr. Waller has since remedicd by hav- ing had prevared a book jor the purpose, and having the matter in charge to keep proper accounts. The same faulty methods apply to the collection of rents and tuition fees, aud, in fact, to the general system of keeping ac- counts as ihey existed hereiofore. In the maiier of general expenditures no record was kept of where certain permanent improvemens or repairs were made, o what school or schools certain supplies and the kind were delivered and the cost of such sup- the amount expended for lights, water. nd rents, for library books, bocks' for iu- digent childrel, etc. Ali tuese items were charged to the separate commitiees heving the respective expendi- tures in charge, and were accounted 1o s & whole, but uo compilation was ever made to show these trans<actions in detail. An account has been kept at the depart- ment’s storehouse of the different supplies and materials received and delivered fo the aifferent schools, but never upon a basis of i, or doliars and cents, Waller is now having prepared & tabu- lated book, which will give the entire monthly expenditures of the depariment, sosegregated as (0 show what suppiics bave been furnished each school und the:r c and material tor repairs ade and where made, the salaries paid to the teachers and janitors in each school, the rents paid, tne cost of lights, fuel and water as used in each school, in fact, 10 give in detui and aggregaie the cost to run each schoot and necessarily the aver- age cost per pupil attending such. It willalso show the cost to run the office, storehouse and shop, in fact, cover evers item of expenditure and enable the Board of Education to adjust them proverly and evenly. We iind a opened, which will embrace the different ac- counts as above, as weil as all others coming uuder the head ot “Receipts and expe:di- tores.” From this ledger a monthly trial bulance Will be drawn to verify the clericsl | work and to suow the actual condition of every account and of every fund and give a comprehensive knowledge of the condition of the department.
