Time, 1:32%5, FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHUKCH, PAT MURPHY WaS | ON HIS METTLE In a Very Close Finish Hs Downed Moylan a i Nose. . | Benamela Administered Another Sound Drubbing to Morte | Fonse. | Lady Hurst First at 0dds of 6o to 1 | E mer F Scored a V.ry Clever Win—Estaca in Front. There was a very close finish side yesterday, and the decision of the judges did not meet with the approbation of all of the assembied crowd, a number of whom gathered around the judges’ stand and manifested their dissatisfaction in joud horse tal The cause of all the at Ingle- gibberish was the nose-and-nose termina- tion of fourth race, in which Pat Murphy gained the decision over Moylan. Some were positive that Moyian won by a head, while others made ita length. The fact of the matter was that opposite the | paddcck Moylan looked a handy winuer, | but “dogged” it badly the last filty yards, and the fast-coming Pat nipped him a nose on the wire. It is probably fortunate for bettors that some of these noisy gentry who indulge in much of the “xicking” are not picking head finishes from the stand, | for the police would be called on every | day 1o quell incipient riot: | Pat Murphy bes shown race form of | Jate, and his partisans tackea him down | from 12 to 7. Slaughter rode one of his rare good finishes, and Jones on Moylan was just a bit chacrined over the result. | Yemen, the 11 to 5 favorite, ridden by T. | Bloan, wa= unplaced. | The well-known trainer, Mat Storn, | sprung quite a surprise in the first race, a six-forlong dash for maiden three-year- olds. He entered Atticus and Lady Hurst, | the pair covpled reaching at one stage 60 | 101in the betting. In ahard drive Lady | Hurst finished a_ length in front of The | Tourist, a 50 to 1 outsider ridden by | Golden. Basquil, the favorite, was third. Picking up 107 pounds Benamela, the 4 to5 favorite, made a zaliop of the mile | and a sixteenth seiling run, romping in | nearly two lencths abead of Morte Fonse, which horse bad second call in the ring. Two Cheers ran a clever race, being third ciose up at the end. Tu the six-furlong epin that was next | called a misceilaneous collection of seli- ing-platers lined un, ten startingin all. | Elmer F was played from threes to 5o 2 | favoritism, and taking the lead from Red | Bird in the stretch won very handily from Whitestone, who made a fine run from | the rear. Minnie Cee, away poorly, was | third. | The final seven-furlonz run proved an thing for the 7 to 10 favorite, Estaca, | on which Sloan bad the lcg up. He took | the lead from Edgemount at tbe far turn and, not extended, passed the stand two lengths in front'of Addie Buchanan, with the second choice, St. Aignon, third. o THE HOBART STAKE TO-DAY The Greatest Field of Starters Tha Has Faced the Barrler This Season. Seven well-filled events make up the card at Ingleside to-day. It 1s the clos- ing day of the meeting and the rich Ho- bart stake is the special feature of the programme. All of the best handicap horses, both local and Eastern, are entered and at weights that give the race a very open look. Tue crack jockeys of the coun- try will be seen sporting silk, and the finish should be a memorable one. It is the best field that has facea the bnrxier, this season. After the hubbub over the Pat Murphy- Moylan finish had subsided, Ed Corrigan, ownaer of Moylan, said jokingly to some friends, “I went up in the stand ana told the judges that 1 hoped they wouldn't think I was tue one that was making all that noise,” The Chicago turfman added if any one was loser thronch the tight finish he thought he ought to be counted in, but | that he was perfectly satistied tbe officials made no error. Captain Rees, the pre- siding judge, is @ man of very keen per- ceplive powers, with a world of experi- ence in separating horses at the wire, and horsemen who have raced.on Eastern tracks where that official has presided in the stand say his mistakes have been few and very, very far between. Pat Dunne had his horse Benamela tilted a few hundred by Tommy Griffin. The brown colt was entered 1o be sold in the selling event he won for $500. _Griffin ran second with Morte Fonse, and when | Benamela was led up to be suctioned Téramy vid bim up to $1000, Mr. Dunne retaining his horse with the usual $5.
