12 THE SAN FRANCISCO. CALL. “THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 1897 TURNED DOWN A FEW FAVORITES Ladies’ Day Was Not So Prolific of Winning Choices. Racina, Governor Budd, Grey- hurst and Santa Bella Were All Beaten. Libertine Placed the Handicap to His Credit—T. Murphy Piloted Hello to Victory in the Hurdie Race. It was “ladies’ day” again at Ingleside track yesterday and the beautiful weather drew a large attendance. The carsegn- veying veople home at the conclusion “of the races looked like popcorn balis cov- ered with flies, and just a few additional | cars next time would be a great con- venience. As the meeting progresses the favorites appear to be on the wane, for but two showed to the best advantage. Two or three timid pencilers did not weigh in yesterday and later bad cause for repent- ance. H. Hunn’s entry The Sinner was the first to bow!l over a warm choice. Racina ‘was an even money favorite for the open- ing five-furlong dash for maiden three- year-olds, but succumbed very easily to The Sinner, who started at odds of 3 to 1. Modestia was a good third. A six-furlong spin proved a very easy thing for E. Corrigan’s Moylan, the even- money favorite for the next number on the programme. The hooded horse passed Toano when sauared away for the final run and never had to be extended, win- ning without effart from the old sprinter. The rider of Yemen, who finishel sec- ond, claimed that his mount was fou'ed by Toano in the stretch and the latter sprinter was disqualified, which ruling gave third place to the 100 to 1 shot Coda. Even money and 11 to 10 were the odds laid against Libertine capturing the mile and a sixteenth handicap. Thi again up on keea edge and taking up the running down the back stretch fiesd to the wire, finally finishing three fourths of a length in front of Installator. Lobengula, rather injudiciously ridden by Jones, received show honors. By clever piloting, T. Murphy got Hello across the line first in the hurdle race, beaiing a very moderate lot of company. Governor Budd was a 3 to 2 favorite, with several hot tins out on Malo Diablo, Can- dor and Mr. Reel. Atu post time a stiff play forced the price against Hello from 6 t03. Malo Diablo started to make the running, but quit earlier than his friends expected. Candor hit the stretch first looking all over a winner. About this time Murphy, on Hello, began making his play, and | wuen the last jump was reached that jumper was in front. From that on he held the fiela safe and downed the outsider, | Mr. Reel, very cleveriy. The favorite | tinaliy took third place. | Frank K., of the magnificent cripple di- | vision, ridden by Willie Martin, handled his field to od advantage in the fiith event over & mile. Greyhurst was a hot | 6 to 5 favorite for the run, with Rey del Tierra a pronounced second choice. ~ * The gray favorite was out in front of the field until nearing the bend for the stand, when Frank K scrambied into the jead and, without much left in reserve, downed | the stretch-running Morte Fonso nearly a | Jength. Rey del Tierra in a drive. | Willie Martin, with his many kinks and | gowara s. curves, led to the defeat of Santa Bella in | tbe final six furlong run. The mare was a6 to5 chance, but ridden in a most sus- picious manne managed to take the show. lister was always in the lead and won rid- den out from Arapahoe. RS e OTES. The Rosedale Club, Joe Ullman. Harry Harns and Eii Perles retired. Mr. Ull- | man stated that he has been ill for some days and will take a rest. The Ingleside officials have decided to in future reject the entries of Toano and Walter J. It is their opinion that the pair have a tendency to teach other horses bad pranks. One of the features of Saturday’s card will be a match race. Pat Murphy and Yemen were matched yesterday to run five farlongs, each to carry 100.pounds, for $i000 a side, the assoc.ation to add $500 aduitional. ‘George Berry supplied the Murphy end of the coin. H. H. Hunn, former trainer of Walter Hobart's horses and lessee of The Sinner, together with his jockey, Pryce, were yes- teraay tusperded on account >f the re- markable improvement shown in that norse’s running. The officials intimated that it might possibly be proven that Pryce did not try very hard for lps coin last time out. Greyhurst. entered in_the fifth race to be sold for $600, was claimecd by Tom Grif- fin, the ** Hawkshaw ™ of the selling event affairs. Trainer Ab Stemler was quite wrothy, but under the conditions Grifin, | who ran ~econd to Frank K in the race, | put up $925 and added tne gray colt to his | string. The Cambridge stable also nsrrowly escaped losing Rey del Tierra. A. Nick- | ells, owner of Veragua, putin a claim for the colt, but was just one minute late. It is just beginning to dawn on Califor- nia race-zoers why the far Eastern turf officials consider the complex methods employed by Willie Martin in piloung | borses so indecipherable, and informed him in future to stay at home and soring them on the wild, woolly and uncanny | Westerner. He has furni-hed two or three very elegant pieces of tatoned work oi 1ate, not failing to include that highly | embellished exnibition of borsemanship astride Santa Bella yesterday. When Mr. Martin _bets the public should bet, but whben Mr. Martin does not bet the public had better not. This little item is not in- tended for an exhibi:ion of losing paste- boards; they are to be found in [proiusion in the betting ring. D. M. Boyd, who arose in his wrath and was very indignant because the press mentioned his name in connection with the Haymarket scandal on January 2, was vesterday indefinitely suspended by the stewards at Ingleside track for having on various occasions intimated to Jockey Stanford that the horse could bs “laid up” to advaniage. As Haymarket was oniy leased by Boyd the horse’s entry will here- after be refused until such time as it is proved that horseman has no further con- | nection with the jumper. For failing to | report these suggestions to the stand Jockey Stanford was fined $25 and sus- pended for the balance of ths meeting. | " Foilowing is the entry list for to-day’s running events: First race, seven-elghths of a mile, selling, three- vear-olds: 0 Philip H...... 58) Osric 11 3 $.4 George Paimer. 01 | Jim Blackburn.104| Secoud race, seven-eighths of a mile: | i i | | .108 S04 | ¢ Z 374 Lindsay. — 815 Boreas.. 108| 341 Joan. 104 | Capt. The Pickett Woman Is Considered the Cleverest Pickpocket in the City. Annie Pickett, a notorious pickpocket, was arrested yesrerday in Sacramento, and Policeman Al Wright left in the afternoon to bring her back to the City. Another woman was with her, and she was also placed under arrest. She is sup- posed to be Mamie Bonner, another noto- rious pickpocket. These two women are wanted here on a charge of grand larceny, the complaining witness being George Hill, 963 Eighth street, Oakland. Hill came to the City a few weeks ago irom the East with his wife, for the bene- fit of ber health, They were boarding at 927 Geary street on December?. Thatday Hill, while walking along O’Farrell street, met the two women. They accosted him and finally induced him to enter a saloon with them. They went intua rear room and there Hill was relieved of $400. On discovering his loss he went to po- lice headquarters and reported it. He was advised to swear to warrants for the arrest of the two women, but he declined, as he did not wish his wife to know of bis experience. He wanted the police to compel the women to return the money and say no more about it, but they refused to move in the matter unless Hill would agree to prosecute them. Hill placed his case in the hands of private detectives. They rounded up the women and got them to consert to return the money last Friday. They failed to keep their appointment and quietly left the City. Next morning Hill swore to the warrants for their arrest snd a description of them was sent broadcast from police headquarters. Both women have been arrested many times on charges of grand larceny, but they always succeeded in being acquitted, as they were too clever at the business to leave a loophola for the police to secure direct evidence against them. They have also been arrested several times for vagrancy, but by some means only knpwn to the initiated they were never convicted. There is a charge of va- grancy now pending against the Pickett woman in one of the Superior courts, and if the present charge of grand larceny should fail it will be pressed against her. The Pickett woman is one of the clever- est pickpockets known to the police. She has an innocent-looking face, which she uses to advantage in entrapping her numerous victims. HOTEL ARRIVALS.
