12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1896 JUST A FEW MORE FAVORITES The Talent Cashed on Four More Winning Choices at Ingleside. Preston Barely Beat Imp. Santa Bella Out in a Fierce Drive. fiddze Jones Got Palomacita Hcmz a Nose Before Collins—Cash Day Fell Into a Soft Spot. There were some decidedly top-heavy choices starting in the different events at Ingleside yesterday, and unfortunately * for the brokmaking fraternity they all won, and heavily backed at that. Pat Dunne’s Preston had a close call from de- Jeat, but Mount McGregor and Cash Day virtually rolled in. Captain Skidmore and Greyhurst were the oniy outsiders to save the ring from complete annibilation, the jatter scampering in ahead of his field at the juicy price of 15 to 1. Another charming day for racing pur- poses drew fully as large a crowd to the | track as on the opening day of the week. There were no accidents of any sort and the talent left for home with money to chase Government bonds. For some reason, among arters in the first race over a distance of ven furlongs, imp. Friar was picked as abcat due to land a purse and carried most of the coin bet. e ran second to Captain Skidmore to the stretch and then The captain at oddsof 5 to 1 won very handily from McFarlane in 1:303{. Little Bob coming fast at the end was a hird. he mile selling affair for two-year- olds proved a stumbling block for players. Lincoln II, with 101 pounds in the saddle, carried some big commissions at odds of 6105, but could finish no better than third. Grevhurst, with young Siaughter in the saddle, siepped out in the lead and was never headed, fini<hin p before Osric IL iz 1:411¢. The winner was ! 15 10 1 at post time. For once Preston captured a race with nothing up his sle The brown sprinter was made a 3 to 5 choice over his company in Jongs, although Ceesarian had almost as many friends who supported him at 2 to 214 to1l. The favorite got the decision, though imp. Santa Bella came very close 1o defeating him. Cssarian and the rank outsider, Trappean, were the leaders to the siretch, where Martin, on Preston, brought his mount up oun the outside, hooking up with the first-named horse. The pair indulged in a hot drive to the wire, and while 8o engag up on the inside with nta Belia and Jooked to have rsached the tape first, but Preston gained the verdict. Cesarian was a bang up third. With Salvable scratched out of the next event, at six furlongs, Mount McGregor had only to gallop to take the purse from Miss Ross, starting a prohibitive 1 to 6 favorite. 1t looked most cubious at one time for the 6to 1 choice Palomacita during the progress of the mile and a sixteenth run, Cut_ off on the backsiretch and pocketed, Jones got ou finishing T. Murphy on Coliins, Hermanita was and ou won by & nose in 1:49}4. thira. ‘Ihe oid stake horse, Cash Day, struck what could truthfully be termed a ‘‘tapi- oca’ in the seven-furiong dash for non- winners in 1896. Opening 1n the betting at1to 2 the price was speedily rubbed to 1t He sailed to the front on the beek- stretch and fairly romped in ahead of Lovdal, the second choice. Midas finished a distant third. R T Notes. This is “ladies’ day’’ again at Ingleside, and, as usual, the card happens to be an extra good one. for the largest attendance of the meeting. He reports a very profitable ar- gument with the Eastern pencilersduring the past summer. | There were a number of very close fin- | ishes vesterday, but Judges Rees and Wilson appeared to be fully capable of | wrestling with them. % | . Many did not like the ride J. Gardiner { furnished on the back of Arrezzo. There | is a possibility that the public has the bay ison of Arctino overestimated, especially | when it comes to going a distance. 2 Bill Murry held Collins at the post with one hand and a stopwatch with the other. Once the portly resident of Sacramento got within dangerous proximitv to the heels of Hazard, and had that gelding sud- | denly taken the idea in his head to feel i coltish and kick a bit, some jeweler would have been busy for six weeks repairing a | dilapidated-looking chronometer. o | " From the showing of speed in the mile land a_sixteenth ran it is quite evident | that Palmerston runs better with light | weignt on his back. e In a letter toa friend in this ‘Gity the Chicago bookmaker, Sam Summerfield, | says he may change bis mind and come | out this way ere leng. He had been in- { formed the game was bad. Possibly the | gentleman who sent this information did | not have oil enough left to keep his lamp | burning. .\ Judging frome her showing in the last | event old Geraidine has tired of the toils and tribulations of the turf and longs for |a life of ease and luxury far from the sound of the saddling gong and the as- sistant starter’s lash. First over the line in many a hard fought struggle, both East and West, she does not deserve being sent [ to the post to have the dust kicked in her | face by ‘‘dogs” that in the past could not make her gallop. i Following are to-day’s entries: st race, one mile; purse—190 Lobengula 1105, 200 Dingarven 105, 168 Instigator 99, 196 Thornhill 112, 195 Articus 105, 187 Miss Brummel 96.
