THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, DECEMBER'3, 1896 THE FAVORITES WERE SLAUGHTERED Bookmakers Kept Most of the Coin on ‘‘Ladies’ Day.” Griffin’'s Horse, The Dragon, Was a Surprise in the Handicap. Al Stanfcrd Landed the Hurdle Event With Cap:ain Reces — Libertine B:aten Out by Howard S. Ladies’ day apparently grows in popu- Jarity ut Ingleside track. Yesterday the grand stand was fairly jammed with the fair the shoulder and a well posted up ‘‘dope book.” The sport was devoid of accident, bar a nasty tumble received by little Claw- son, who had the mount on the favorite Red Glenn in the last event. . Passing the stand the horse was pocketed, and stumb- ling threw.the boy hard. The hard-headed youngster escaped with a few slight bruises. \ Tae books had a great day of it, as but one lightly played even-money choice sauntered in ahead of his field. Eddie Jones ingratiated himself with the iadies | by landing three winneis. Horatio, a 30 to 1shot, started the ball rolling by captur- ing the first race, and from that timeon | the guessing was difficult. Even with but four starters in the mile | handicap the crowd put their checks down wrong. Nebuchadnezzar carried most of the money bet at the short odds of 9 to 10, but Tommy Griffin’s black horse, The Dragon, happened to be feeling well, and showing the way to ‘Nebby’ from the jump Leat him a length in1:42)4. Lin- coln II was third, “The result of the mile and a furlong huidle affair truly shocked the informa- tion-seekers. Captain Rees, the Corrigan entry, & 12 10 1 shot, excellently ridden by | Al Stanford, raced away in the lead with the favorite Burmah, and coming away at the finish won ridden out by a length. Governor Budd, a 40 to 1shot, came fast tne last furlong and downed the first choice a neck for the place. Galen Brown’s big bay horse Libertine, with 115 pounhds in the saddie, looked about the most likely of the seven starters in the six-furfong purse event, and was heavily played at 6 to 5. Down the stretch | it looked very rosy for the favorite, when | below the paddock the 7 to 1 outsider, Howaid 8, with 97 pounds up, came skim- ming along and won galloping. Macklin on Libertine was forced to adrive to get the place from McLight. Twelve two-year-olds lined up at the barrier in the opening five-furlong scram- ble. Shaw, astride of the 30 to 1 shot Horatio, got his mount away in iront and was never beaded, leading Osric II, wno, | with Good Times, ruled equal in the bet- | ting, out u length and a halif at the wire. The fitth race, over the s:ven-furlong route, did not draw out a very high-class lot. With Johnny McHale scratched Gratify was a hot even-money choice and won from Brammetta, with pounds to spare. Miss Cunningham was third. For the final mile and a sixteenth run six started and Red Glenn opened an even- money chance. He receded to 8 to5 and whetber he would have won or not will forever remain a mystery owing to the ac- tident. As the race wasrun Palomacira headedTrappean in thestretch and finished | nearly two lengthsin advance of Thelma at the wire. Little Cripple was a close third. VAP e Notes. Had Osric 1I not been cut off he would undoubtedly have beaten Horatio out in the‘opening race. Gallant has been turned over {o Andy Blakeley and will receive a course of echooling over the sticks, Lloyd, who rode J O C, and Martinus, who sex, many with field glass swung over | had the leg up on Governor Budd in the hurdle race, were indefinitely suspended for pulling their mounts, so the officials in the stand said. Martinus rode an al- niost green jumper and a 40 to 1 outsider, and if his ride on that horse was not as strong as the one Burmab, the 6 to 5 fa- vorite, received at the hands of Andy Blakeley, there must be a rafs of blind men watching the races at the track. Following are t>-day’s entries First race, thirteen-sixteenths of a mile, selling—169 Clissie B 100 85 San Marco 101, 101 Summwertime. 102, 168 Reddington 102, 139 Doubtful 98, (161) Tempestuous 85, 173 Wyoming 105. cond rece, seven-eighths of a mile, two- yesr-olds—Zamar 1l 102, (156) Inflammator 105, (170) Arezzo 105, 170 Popinjav 98, Sir Andrew 95, 81 Candelaria 105, (131) Geyser 105, 171 The Roman 105. SEEKING NEW FIELDS. Jockey Chevalier Ruled off Local Race~ tracks, Departs for Guatemala. Chevalier, the clever jockey who made | such an unenviable record with ‘Little | Pete” at the Bay District track, and who has | been ruled off in consequence, is about to | seek new fields in which to piy his trade. | Saturday hedrove to the Maildock in | haste and clamored for a berth on the Costa Rica, about to sail for Guatemala. | There was none for him, every inch of the | vessel’s capacity being already taken up. | The game Jittile man offered ail kinds of | money in exchange for accommodation, | but the passengers, who had all been | transferred from the City of Sydney, were | determined. not to part with their privi- | lege at any price. 3 i Tuesday morning, however, Chevalier ! steamed away aboard the City of Sydney, which has been turned.into a freight ship | and is to make arun to La Libertad and back. The Sydney is not sgpposed to | carry passengers, but Chevalier has man- aged to offer sufficient and convincing ar- guments to be accepted on poard for the trip. Chevalier’s anxiety to get away has two sides. In the first place, his work on local tracks has causec him to be ruled off | and has shut off his mode of livelihood. In the second place, he has found a brand- | new field in Guatemala. | Emil Schuman, the only horseman down | | there, cabled here for a clever jockey to ride during the Christmas races. He wanted an intelligent boy, capable of rid- ing according to instructions, and he got him in Chevalier. The deal was made throngh W. Miller of the gas company, and when the jockey reaches Guatemala the natives will be treated to a trick or two of which they have as yet no knowl- edge. —— s HOTEL ARRIVALS. \ LICK HOUS T E Johnson, San Jose W H Schaffer, Stockton J C Hall, J%, San Juse A M Gardner, Napa | i D aBu more.
