The top figures tation indlcate maximum temperature for the those underneath it:if any, the amount of rainfall, of melted snow in inches and hundredths, during the past twelve hours. Isobars, or sciid | connect poin's of equal alr pressure; iso- otted lines, equal temperature. The means high barometric pressure and lly accompanled by fair weather: “low” to low pressure. and s usually preceded and accompunled by cloudy weatherand rains. “Lows” usually first appear on the Washington | coast. When the pressure is high in the interior | low along the ‘coast, and the isobars extend | north and south along the coast, rain is probable; | but when the “low” 15 inclosed with isobars of marked curvature, rain south of Oregon is improb- 1in able. In the early dealinis the mgrket was barely steady, but subsequently on moderate selling the leading issues yielded frac- tionally. The selling was based on the poor show- ing of-the Pennsylvania system for Octcber, & belief that the returns of the Western roads for the fourth week of the current month will be un- favorable on account of the snow biockades and Jower cables for American securities from London. Later on_the active issues improved slightly, the Octnber statement of the St. Paul uaving proven a lot better than generally expected. For the month named the decrease in net earn- ings was $207,413 The road was operated for 58.72 per cent, sgainst 50.46 per cent for the cor- respondiug petfod in 1895.
