The mar- ket while strong and advaneing 15 not character- 1zed by feverish buying. Although some selections, of packer bides have advanced 76 per cent in twelve weeks 1o blame attaches to tanners. They have bonght only as hides were absolutely needed £o keep the liquors from going to waste. The rise in values is ot ip any degree the resuit of specu- lation or even competitive buying. If the past twelve weeks were o be gone over again it is dificult to see how the re- sult could be aifferent. Natural conditions have served to boom hidesand the tanners have no Tecourse but to accept the inevitable, and, as far as in their power, mark up the price of jeather. “The market_for country hides is less excited, but there is no disposition to abate pri The spurt in the quotations exrly in the week was cansed by several buyers competing for the scanty holdings of the desired selections. It is understood the dealers are paying high prices in the country for buffs, and the next saies will efther beat higher rates'than are now quoted or & considerable loss will ensue.
