10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALI, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1896 RACING AGAIN - AT OAKLAND Four Horses Were Beaten and the Ring Kept the Coin. Kamsin Barely Downed the Rank OQutsider Salisbury II Driving. Trappean Again Turns Up a Handy - Winner—Roselle First at 10 to I Osric IT a Good Youngster. Lavish in the distribution of compli- mentary tickets, the California Jockey Club had a eood astendance the opening day of its semi-monthly meetinz. It did not open under the most opportune cir- cumstances. | The weather was cloudy, | P¢ and a stiff sou’easter gave warning ofan | approaching storm. And sgain the card, a most ordinary one, without a tinge of class about it, served to keep enthusiasm | 103 Mr. Allen had the track in | in restraint. good condition, and the ante-mortem inquiries held by the *dope” - players pointed to a good cay for favorites, but their prognostications were in vain, for but one—Montgomery—earned brackets. Not unlike borses and jockeys, starters | betting at oddsof 9 to 10,and taking the lead in the stretch, won hard ridden a neck in front of Excuse, with Cadenza, a 30 to 1 shot, third. Charley Sanders’ Racine colt Alazan, was backed down from 8 to 5 to evens to pull of the five-furlong scramble for two- year olds, but after racing out in front with Roltaire died away in the final run, finishing fourth. Roselle, played from 10 10 434 to 1, finished strong and won easily by turee lengths. Roltaire was nipped out the last jump for the place by February. The Burns & Waterhouse stable turned out quite a likely youngter in the race following, another “five-furlong -dash for members of the two-year old divisicn, in Osric II. He sauntered over to the post a 5to 1 chance, and catching Tempestuons, the leader, a sixteenth trom the wire, beat Purser's gelding out a neck in 1:02)g. Celeste, the 12 to 5 favorite, was virtually left at the post. . The best run of the day was a mile selling affair, with a field of seven start. ing. The beiting at post time favored Red Gien, who was backed from 7 to 5/ down to evens. Kamsin, who opened at the same odds, receded to 9 to 5 in most of the books. The balance of the starters re- ceived slight support. Carrying eighty- eight pounds and getting away a bad last, | Maxey on Salisbury II ran around his field and leading to within a few yards of | the wire was beaten out but a nose by Kamsin owing to Jones’ snperior riding. Two Cheers was third. Red Glen was! pocketed through the stretch. The final six furlong sprint was taken | by Trappean with 9 10 2 about him in the books, who came fast through the stretch and winning without trouble from | Howard. Palomacita, the favorite, ran yorly. > Following are to-day’s entries: First race, three-quarters of a mile, two- year-old ling—3 torpedo 98, 103 Inflam- | nator 9! In furtherance of the announced pur- pose of the Southern Pecific Company and the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Com- pany to patch up their rate war on freight between kere and Portland, B. Campbell, traffic manager of the latter company, ar- rived here yesteraay from Portland. He was accompanied by W. H. Hurlburt, general passenger agent of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company. Mr. Campbell spent the day at the local offices of tie company, looking into ihe details of the questions which are likely to arise before an adjustment is effected. ~ As soon as he has the local situation well in hand it is understood he wiil have a con- ference with J. C. Stubbs, traffic manager of the Southern Pacific Company. In view of the fact that for more than three vears both companies have suffered great loss in the rate war they have waged against each other 1t is believed that an eariy settlement of the existing differ- ences will result. At present the average freight rate be- tween here and Portland is §1 per ton. Before the present difficuity arose the rates averaged from $250 to §15a ton. It is not expected thai rates will be restored to anything like these figures, but some material advance will foilow the declara- tion of peace. R — A BOON FOR JOBBERS. New York No Longerto Have ' oly of Trade. By the new schedule of rates from the East, established by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, California jobbers will have a chance to purchase in other mar- kets besides New York. The new rates go into effect to-day. The freight rate from Boston, Philadel- phia and other principal points on the Atlantic seaboard will be the same as from New York on the leading commod ties, with a minimum rate, however, of 75 cents the 100 pounds. ———— Av Evening With Dickens. Dan O'Connell lectured tos fair house last night at Union-square Hall on “‘An Evening With Dickens.” The_lecturer was introduced by “‘Uncle George” Bromiey. Mr. O'Connell ?mueded to portray the great English novel- stin four roies—the convivial, the pathetic, the sentimental and the merely descriptive. The pathetic side of Dickens’ manifold nature was illustrated with ‘Littie Ne.l” and the con- vivial with “Pickwick.”” - During the course of the evening vocal selections were rendered by Mrs. Grace Aylward and Mr. Jones.
