o = THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATUEDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1896 i————————-——_—'fl—_——_'——“———————__——___~———_——————_—-_—=—_~—__h_ RACEGOERS LIKE HAWAIAN MUSI The Dusky Islanders At- tract Much Attention at Ingleside, When the Barrier Was Raised Frecman Failed to Get Ruinart Away. LIBERTINE THEN WCN EANDILY Mamie Scott Beaten Through Poor Jockeyship—Lucille First at Very Comfortable Odds. The dusky Hawaiian Islanders who fur- | nish the music at Ingleside track attracted almost as much attention yesterday as did the horses. with the members of the Royal Hawaiian hand, and their sweet voices charmed all in the rendition of their native songs. The weather was perfect for racing pur- poses and the track was good, aithough not fast. However, as election day draws nigh a slight falling-oif in tke attendance is perceptible. Again were some decidedly well-played favorites knocked down. Mamie Scott looked a ‘lead-pipe” for the opening event, but C. Slocum furnished a sort of almost-any-place-will-do ride ang she fin- ished second. Of the other choices, Sepoy and Libertine only were successful. In tne final race of the day, a mile-purse event, Libertine and the crack three-year- old Ruinart were to meet, and the crowd 7 expected to see a horserace, but were, to / an extent, disappointed. The closing bei- | ting was all in favor of Libertine, who was held at to 5. Although by no means neglected, the odds against the three- year-old drifted back from 1lto5to3. The other starters were Sir Play and Wawoma. When thie barrier was lifted Patsy Free- man aboard Ruinart must have been in a trance, for the other three starters were all of forty yards ahead of his mount be- fore he seemed to realize that he too was supposed to go. L:bertine led throughout, ana although Sir Play had him straight over a furlong from the stand, he won bandily at the wire by a length and a half in 1:4414, with Sir Play second. Freeman on the second choice chased the bunch 1n, finishing last, but close up. Well away at ihe start, Ruinart would haye won. Considered s moral and well played at odds of 310 5in the opening six-furlong dash ishing second to Spry Lark, 2n 8 to 1 shot, ridden by Tommy Butler to the best ad- vantage. Sepoy. a brown colt by Hindoo, carry- | g “Curly”’ Shielas’ coiors, led almost from start to finish in the five-furiong scramble for maiden two-year-olds, beat- ing Vino two lengths. Cogent was a fair third. The winner was a 2 to . favorits in the betting. A. B. Spreckels, president of the Ingle- side Asst 1he meeting with the St. Saviour filly, Lu- cille, in the third event, over six furiongs. She went to the post wiih 6 to1 about her, and coming away from the field easiiy at thie end won by three lengths from Circe. Euncino, the 2 to 1 choice, ran a very poor race, finishing next to the last hors It appears that Lou Lou R can run in ush, but not on a good track. Mr. 8inks’ mare opened a 2 to 5 favorite in the ring for the five-furiong skip that was tourth on the card, reached tv 3 to 5and finished third, never being able to get to the front. Backed down 1rom 8 to 4} tol Grandezia was outin front ail the wa and won as she pleased from Alazan, a 50 to 1 shot. The favorite was ridden by Henry Shields, the ex-champion of the | Australian barrier. Saiiel B Se IMPORTANT TO HORSEMEN Fines WIIl Be Imposed If Horses Are Not Registered by November 1. The Pacific Coast Jockey Club has de- cided to hold no racing on election day. The judges suspended C. Slocum for his poor ride on Mamie Scott, pending fur- ther investigation. It is said scme inter- | esting developments may result from the | race. Captain Rees guestioned Owner Sam | Hildreth for a plausible reason as to why Shields finds it so difficult to get short- priced horses away from the post.
