2 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1896 EAVORITES AT ODDS WERE BEATEN McHugh Rode Babe Murphy in a Most Slovenly Manner, i | I Reddington and St. Aignon Both§ Finished in Front of Torsina. [ SACRAMENTANS IN HARD LUCK —~ F.eur d: Lis, With Duffy Up, Nosed Out by Mid.ight, Ridden by Jones. The talent went out to Ingleside track | yesterday to make five pass and put | thirteen bookmakers out of business. The | pones” did not roll right and every one | of-these thirteen bookies will be sawing | wood at the same old stand io-day. Babe | Murphy, a 7 to 10 shot, first spiit the com- | binations, and then Torsina, a 1 to 5 chanee, failed to weatier the gale. Fieur | de Lis in the two-year-old event lizhtened | the pockets of the Sacramento contingent and the hard luck ceased, the favorites taking the remaining two events. Itwas | siniply another illustration of the uncer- | tainties of racing. The card was not a *Derby day” one by | any means, but the attendance was good. | The track had dried out nicely, being in | very fair condition. Although a horse might be rigged | wp in somebody’s back yard, astride which Jockey McHugh could receive riding les- sons, that industrious youth prefers prac- tice in a real race, and the crowd was again asked to contribute to his education in the opening seven-furlong ran_and ac- ceded, 1tis getting expensive, but with Spartan-like fortitude, race-goers live with a hope that he may yet become a Garrison. He had the leg upon the 7 to 10 favorite | Babe Murphy, showed that. he can wait, and was beaten out a length or so by | Bueno, also quite extensively backed at | 910 d. . | Bookmaker George Rose’s Torsina | Jooked like emeralds from Ireland in the six and a half furlong spin for three-year- olds, and was held at the prohibitive odds | of 1'to 5. Showing speed at intervals, she | fagged out badly in the stretch, ending up | third. Reddington, a 7 to 1 shot, witn 107 | pounds in the saddle, ran like a real good one, winning very cleverly by a couple of | lengths in 1:2414, St. Aignon coming fast | at the end, beating the favorite out for place. k Chapter three wasthe one that furnished oceasion for Eddy Jones to distineuish | himseli. He had the mount on Green Morris' filly Midlight, and after leading from the jump-cif to within a furlong from the wire was challenged by the 7 10 10| choice, Fleur de Lis, ridden by “Montana’’ | Duffy. The pair igdulged in a rare nose | and ndse finish to the stand, Midlight | § finally getting the decision by an inch or s0. The winuer was as good as3to 1 in the ring. | A 30 101 shot, Favory, backed down to | 15, came very ciose to downingthe3 to 5| favorite, Little Cripple, in the mile-selling | {vent. | The outsider cut out the runnidg, show- | ing two lengths in front of the fifst choice | rounding the bend for home, and it was.| only by hard riding that Jones got | Humphrey’s brown gelding past the judges a neck in advance of the outsider. Hermanita finished in the show. } The last rice, & six-furlong sprint, went to the 6 10 & i varado. Montgom- ery and Circe raced their -heads off the | first three-qnariers of the journey, when the favorite assumed the lead, winning in | driving finish from Daylfght, which latter | colt ran a very clever race. | Notes. The judges concluded at the finish of | the mile run that Si McClain, who rode | Meadow Lark, was capable of patting more ginger into his riding, and restricted him to accepting mounts. from his em- ployers, the Elmwood stock farm. . | +Sandy” McNaughton and Billy'Muir, | looking like fasnion plates from across the | pond, arrived ‘from the Middle West | Wednesday night and tried & hand at | picking winners yesterday. Bookmaker Frank Eckert.left Chicago for San Francisco last night. Dan Honig, the St. Louis horseman, is dus to-arrive here to-day. i Entries for to-day’s running events: b irst race, uarters of a mile, selling— | (27) Nuvy Bl , Therese 97, Spry Lark 97, | Renardine 97, (17) Mamie Scott 103.'Sympas | thetic’s Last 103, Evatt 103. HUNT-DIED Mrs. Wegener 1s Formally Charged With Having Performed a Criminal Operation. .Mrs. Wegener, 419 Eddy sireet, was de- fained at the Central station yesterday on a charge of having performed an opera- tion on Mrs. rge E. Hunt, “which finally resulted in thatlady’s death. Mrs. Hunt passed away at her residence, 511 ‘Turk street, October 23. , Just prior to her death she told Dr. Stope that ber illness was ‘due to an operaticn ‘performed by Mrs. Wegener. Atan inquest held yesterday the jury returned a verdict that Mrs. Hun_t had come to ‘her death as the result of an operation periormed by parties.unknown. This was not in accordance with the evi- dence presented as viewed by Coroner Hawkins and he immediately ordered Mrs. Wegener placed under arrest. Dr. Stone was-thé first witness called, He said he had been summoned to attend Mrs. Hunt and was not long in discover- ing her true.condition. The witness said that he refused to continue in the case unless given the name of the party who had performed the operation. Mrs. Hunt at first refused todo this, but later said it was Mrs. Wegener. Dr. Tavlor, who also attended Mrs, Hunt, corrovorated this tes-.| timony. Mrs. Wegener was then called. She dénied knowing the deceased or that she had'ever called upon or attended ber in any way. After a few moments’ deliberation the jury returned the following verdic! The crime was committed by a person. to the jury unknown.” This was not satisfactory 1 10 the Coroner, who ordered the woman taken to the City Frison, where she was e The State Claims Salvage. Some weeks ago the revenue cutter Hartley dropped her bronze propeller, worth $200, in the bay. A few days later one of the State’ dredgers picked up the valuable article near the seawall, which fact reached thé ears of the commander of ‘the cutter, Licutenant - Butt. Tbat gentleman made a formal demand for the Teturn of thepropeller, but the engineer of the dredger refused to give it up uiless paid the sum of $180, which he claimed as salvage. Yesterday Assistant United, Siates District At- 1orney Knight made a formal demand on_the Harbor Commissioners for the return of the article in dispute, lutimating that unless the request was immediately acceded to a writ of replevin and suit for damages would follow. Mr. Knight further said that 1f the State had any claim against the Government, the proper jorm of procedure would be 10 present a form Dill for the same. Knocked Down, Kicked and Stabb:d Behind the Right Ear. ZRYSIPZLAS HAS SET 1IN, Martin Boyle, a Boy, Arrested on Suspicion of Being Impl:cated in the Assault, Michael Lynch, a laborer living in the rear of 915 Battery street, is supposed to be dying at the City'and County Hospital from injuries he received at the hands of three hoodlums Sunday night. Lynch was walking along Vallejo street somewhat under the influence of liquor. When near Battery street three young hoodlums, without, any provocation, at- tacked him. He tried to defend bimself, but he was no match for them. They knocked him.down, and while on the ground they beat him and kicked him on the head, arms, body and legs, and one of them'stabbed him behingd the right ear. Lynch was left lying on the streetin a semi-conscious condition till & policeman arrived and sent him to -the Receiving Hospital iu the patrol wagon. Dr. Fitz- gibbon dressed the wound behind hisright ear and he was sent home. .. Yesterday morning Lynch was found to be in acritical concition.” The police were notified and he was taken to the Receiv- ing Hospital. Dr. Weil examined him and ordered his immediate removal to the City and County Hospital. X Lynch’s arms and legs are a mass of black brnises from the kicking he received. His skull is-supposed to be fractured in several plades and erysipelas has set in irom the wound belind "his right ear, which was evidently niade with a pair_of scissors. With the faint hope of saving his life an operation will be performed upon him to-day. 3 " From information received Policeman Henneberry went to Gray- Brothers’ stables to arrest Martin Boyle, a boy about 18 years of gge employed there. *As soon as Boyle saW the oflicer he ran, but was- overtaken and captured .on Montgomery street, near California, and promptly handcuffed. . 3 j Boyle was taken by Henneberry to the City and County Hospital to be identified by Lynch, but when they reached there the wounded man was unconscious and in a high fever. & 3 Boyle was taken to the City Prison and will "be detained pending the result of Lyneh’s -injuries. Ho pretended to be very much surprised at his arrest and said he knew nothing whatever about Lynch or his inj E Policemap Henneberry has a different story -to tell. He says he has witnesses who saw the brutal assault upon Lynch and will be able to identify Boyle as one of the three. oA 2 “I have ascertained,”’-said Henneberry, “that the wound behind the ear was caused by a pair.of scissors, an{t I think I wiil be “able 1o prove beyond doubt that Bovle did it. He has a bad name in the neighborhood. He lives with his parents on Vallejo- street, between Battery and Front. +I think I will be abié to Jay my hands on the other two boys, but will know detinitely to-morrow.” i SAN FRANCISCO **CALL. - BUSINESS OFFICE of the San Franclsco CALI— 710 Market street, open untll 12 o'clock’ every night in the year.. 2 BRANCH OFFICES—527 Montgomery street, corner Clay; open until 9:30 o'clock. 839 Hayes street, open until 9:30 o'clock. 718 Larkin street, open untfl 9:30 o'clock.
