12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1896 : _‘__———_—_—____________________________-—————-— NIETO AND YORKE AT THE TEMPLE Both Spoke Last Evening on Religious Toler- F s anee. Uncomplimentary Allusions Fre- quently Made to the APTA A LARGE AUDIENCE PRESENT The New Charter Will Be Discussed Next Thursday Even- ing. A very large aundience attended the meeting at the Metropolitan Temple last evening under the auspices of the Ameri- can Women’s Liberal League. Rev. Father Yorke presided. Rev. Dr. Nieto was the speaker announced for the even- ing. Rev. Father Yorke also spoxe. An organ solo, embracing a medley of patri- otic tunes, opened the proceedings. Rev. Dr. Nieto said that he had heard of sulphurous exhalatious from the plat- form where he then siood. In imagina- tion he could see the flames issuing from the mouths of the American Protective Association speakers. The American flag was a symbol of re- ligious liberty. The constitution of the United States contained more patriotism than was in the hearts of some people. He bad not long ago received a letter alter he had presided at one of Father Yorke’s meetings. The substance of the letter was that he (Nieto) was a humbug when he said that he wanted religious toleration. Rabbi Nieto spoke of the patriotism of the Jews even under greatest adversity. The Jews and the Irishmen, he said, had always been targets for abuse. There were different roads to salvation, chosen according to the people who were to receive it, and that was all 1here was to it. The element of religions persecution, he said, was still dormant and only waits developing circumstances 10 fan it into lambent flame. ‘When the culture of the race was spoken of, along with the wide difference of edu- cation, there was no excuse for religious versecution. Did those who persecuted wish to give themselvesa testimonial of ignorance? If so, they bad succeeded. The spirit which led to religious persecu- tion was diabplical. The American people are disgusted with humbug. nere had been enough of fra- ternal war in the United States. Patri- otic Americans should frown on any at- tempt to provoke hostile sentiments in any part of the country. No one could find one dogma of the Catholicc hurch or one article of faith that was against pa- triotism. The American people were the equal of any people on earth. Why shouid they be behind other peoples in the matter of recognition of religious prejudice? Let every man worship according to his con- science. There was but one judge—God. So long as the hearts of mei were right and they were honest and good the rest was merely a matter of choice. Rey. Father Yorke spoke atsome length. He said the purpose of those who were striving to raise reiigious prejudice was to raise the wind. They were trying to fill the yawnin$ void in their pockets. Re- jected by all decent men and dragging out a miserable existence, they were living out of the pockets of certain politicians. The large meeting indicated that Jew and Gen- tile, Protestant and Catholic were stand- ing together for religious liberty. Things have come to a bad pass when a political ticket was put up by-a body of men who were afraid tc- hava thelr delib- erations publicly known; whose emblem was not the star, but the dark lantern. Father Yorke denied that at the last meeting he had asked his hearers to vote for those he preferred. He had wanted them to vote for their own choice. Next Thursday evening, Kather Yorke announced, a debate in opposition to the proposed new charter will take place in the Metropolitan Temple. SHIPS FOR SALE. Four Have Been Sold to the Salmon Packers nside of a Month. Another Eastern ship has been pur- cbased by the salmon packers. Three weeks ago the Alaska Packers’ Association secured the Bohemia, Sterling and Santa Clara, ana yesterday the Alaska Improve- ment Company secured tne Centennial. The latter arrived here from New York on the 2d inst. with a general cargo ana ever since her owners have been trying to dis- pose of her. She finally changed hands for $14,000 and Captuin Colcord will go back home overland. Captain Pederson, late of the barks Helen W. Almy and Margaret, will take over the Centennial and transform her into a salmon carrier. *“We find it cheaper to buy ships than charter them,” said one of the salmon packers yesterday, very season it has cost from $1000 fo $1500 a month_ for each boat we chartered. They would be gone six or seven monthsand we had to pay out the vaiue of the vessel 1n rent, *‘Then the quarters for the €hinese and white crew bad to be fixed up and 2ll the necessary accommodations put in. When the boat got back to San Francisco we had to tear out all the fixtures and make the vessel as good as new. In that way the expenditure was considerable, and adaed to the charter money made up almost the price of the ship. Now we have our own vessels, and if they do not earn a cent for five months they will make it up during the other seven, when we have them in commission.”” The Sterling, Bohemia, S8anta Clara and Centennial are splendid vessels of their class. They are bwii of oak and are now almost as good as the day they were lzaunched. Between now and the next season in Bering Sea they will be em- ployed on ihne ‘coast, but asscoon as the canneries open they will be put in com- mission and take supplies and men north. In this way the Alaska Packers’ Associa- tion and the Alaska Improvement Com- pany expect to pay for their sbips inside of two vears by the charter money that they will save, e e POLICE AND THE CHARTER. A Circular Letter Sent to Members of the Force. The Citizens’ Charter Association has sent to every policeman in the City a long circular letter expluining the proposed new charter where it relates in any way to the Police Department and the members thereof, Relating to the tenure of office the letter quotes: ““The membeis of the police force in service at the time this charter goes into effect shall constitute such police force.” Therefore members will be permanently retained under civil service rules and reguliations, and no power ¢an yemove them from their positions as long @s they faitbfully perform their duties, Tneletier furiher calls atlention to the | W B Wiike, Guadalups ‘Chester street, 9<:11 NW of Fifth, N fact that pensions and relief and funds for the same and the salaries are practi- cally the same as now existing. In con- clusion the letter says he change in the method of appointing Commissioners from their life tenure to appointment for four years by the Mayor willin no way endanger the stability of the Police De- partment. The charter expressiy places the Police Department under civil service rules and regulations, and you are in every way secured and protected by 1us carefully drawn provisions. Every mem- ber of she Police Department of San Fran- cisco should therefore favor and vote’ for the proposed new charter.” e I B A HOTEL ARRIVALS, 3W WESTERN HOTEL.
