NEW YORK MARKETS. light west- Financial. NEW YORE, N. Y., Sept. 24._Stocks were less active to-day, the sales footing up 180,064 shares, against 221,000 yesteraay, but the tone of the market was firm throughout. The strength of prices was a surprise to the average operator, in view of the advance of the rate of discount by the Bank of England to 3 per cent and the poor show- ing of the St. Paul road for the third week of Sep- tember. Certain traders sold on the idea that the developmen:s referred to would lead 1o liquida- tions, bul, Instead of selling, commission-houses were buyers of the standard issues. Money on time also worked easier, transactions being re- poried at 6 per cent for three to four months. Adaitional purchases of gold in London for ship- ment to the United States had a strensthening in- guence on the share market. On the other hand Sterling exchange was a shade firmer owing (o the raise In money rates abroad, and in some quarters it was thought that this would check the tlow of gold this way. The notably strong stocks were Chicago Gas, the grangers, Manhattan, Louisville and Nasnville, Tobacco and Western TUnion. Manhattan was benefited by reports of better earnings, and Chicago Gas by purchases sald to be for inside account. Sugar was feverish throughout and ranged between 11034@11214, closing at 11135, The reports that the Molicn: hauer Refining Company had increased its capiial stock coidd not bz confirmed. This rumor had a good deal to do with the break in the stock yes erday. ~peculation closed steady 10 firm.
