12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1896. THE OLYMPIAN FRACAS. S. ¥. Hughes and Philip Wand Severely Rebuked by Judge Campbell for Their ¥oul Language. Samuel F. Hughes, druggist, and Philip Wand, sprinter, both members of the Olympic Club, appeared in Judge Camp- béll’s court yesterday. Hughes was charged by Wand with threats against life and ex- hibiting a deadly weapon. The trouble occurred early Tuesday morning in front of Hughes’ store on Post and Powell sireets over a setter dog be- longing to Wand. The language used on the occasion was unfit for publication. Wand, when questioned by the Judge, admitted that he had cailed Hughes a liar and that he was not afraid of him. Charles Morell, who was present during the trouble, testified that Wand made a mo- tion to strike Hughes, and it was not till then that Hugbes drew his revolver and warned Wand to keep away. He did not think Wand’s life was in danger. d The Judge dismissed the case and said he was ashamed;to think that fellow club members could descend to use the lan- nageas testified to. He thought both vand and Hughes ought to be ashamed of themselves, 5 PACIFI0 COAST BOND: The bank clearances at Seattle for the thirty- sixth week of the year figure up as follows: Clear- ances, $433,623 83; balances, $111,482 87. Iuterest ceased September 11. The Los Angeles Times says that assets of the defunct Ci ty Bank having a nominal face value of $100,000 have been valued at $200, this esti- mate being made in a petition for privilege to seil. The Minneloa Town Company, which has been incorporated at Pasadens. has a’ capital stock of $100.000, ¢ivided into 1000 sharesof the par vaiue of $100 each, and of this amount $500 has been actually subscribed. A large number of citizens recently met in con- sultation wich the Board of Supervisors of Madera County to consider the advisability of submi ting 10 the voters of the county a proposition to issue bonds for the erection of a courthouse and jail. District Attorney Miles Wailace expressed the opinion that money should be secured from the school fun of the Siate at 4 ver cent, and a/80 said that he thought that under the constitution forty- year bouds could be issued. K. H.Cox thought ihat $50,000 could be obtained at b per cent. It was finally resol ved by the meeting to request the Supervisors to issue & proclama jon calling for an | slectlon. at which the proposition (0 issue bonds in | the sum of $50,000 for the erection of a court house and jail be submitted (0 the people. The noard of Irusiees of the Washington Flat school District in Calaveras County have been au- thorized 1o issue bonds to th - amount of $300, to buiid and furnish a schoolbouse 1n that district. The voters of Bear Valley District in Mariposa County have voted to issue bonds to provide a new schoolhouse. The capital siock of the California Beet Sugar Estate and Land Company has been piaced a:$2,- 500,000, the incorporators beng John Farquahar Gilmore of Lo.dou, $2,485.000; Wendel Easton, Sau Fraucisco, $2600; 8.50 George Kaston of San Fraucisco, Vincent Neal of Sun Rafael. Victor G. Duboce and Alber: H. Quatman of San Francisco hold stock to the amount of $2500 each. James H. Baeon of the Bank of Salt Lake and First Bank of Mercur has made an offer of settie- ment t0 tue creditors of the bank. He offers, with istance or 1. H. Lea, vice-president of the Dalton & tark Goid, Silver and Lead Mining and Ailling Company, to pay ail claims against the bauk with Dalon ‘& Lark stock aL $1 per share, less any dividends that may accrue in the mean- time, but with interest at the rate of 6 per cent, I he Dalton & Lark Company is capitalized for 82,500, 000, and since its incorporation about eight months ago has paid dividends to the amount of $85,000. They are large siiver and lead producers ngham. A part of Mr. Bucon's offer is as fol- low “I now inclose a proposition from Mr. Res, which only needs the acceptance of four-fifths of My creditors in amount to make it & success. ‘I he stock will be denvered for claims when that amount have accepted. At the present time it is impossible 1o raise cash. The report of the re- ceivers, as pub.ished, shows the ‘total possible | assets’ 10 be worth $58,959 50, which makes, when prorated 80,00 my creuitors, about 20 cents on ihe doilar of their clmms, from which, of course, will be deducied the f-es f0r recervers, their attor- neys and court and other expenses. An estimate of these, If the matter is 10 be prolonged fora year, would probably reduce what the creditors will re- ceive thronsh the receivers to 1v or 15 cents on the doliar. The siock of the Daltou & Lark com- pany sells for 50 cents per share, and in fairly good times is worth far in excess of that price. 1t you will hoid the certificate of ‘stock you get 0f ML Rea for two years. I will agree on the back of it 10 purchaseiv at $1 per share, and to pay therefor, on or before two years, with 6 per cent interest, iess the amount of dividends de- clared by the Daiton & Lark Gold, Silver and Lead Mjoing and Miling company during such time. If the stock should not be worth a doliar per share at | the end of two years, 1 will be paying my debt & youand to Mr. Rea boih; but I would rather pay twice, if need be, than to let any onme truthfully s8y 1 bad not done my best.
