Y., Sept. 8.—Speculation at the Stock Exchange during the early trading was weak In tone, and in the first half hour or so of business prices declined anywhere from 14 to 254 per cent. Manhattan was freely sold. The street was flooded with rumors that the directors at Lhe meetng tobe held lacer in the day would reduce the dividend because of the poor earnings for the las quarter. Manbatian's weskness affected the entire list, but the iosses were generally confined 10 the fractions. Around midday the official an- nouncement was made that the directors of the Manbattan had declared the regular dividend of 134 per cent payable Oc.ober 1. 'he Western Union executive committee has slso recommended the payment of the regular quarterly dividend. Another favo:able develop. ment was (he statement of the St. Paul road for the fiscal vear ended June 30, 1896.
