NEW YORK Financial. NEW YORK, Y., Aug. 27.—The develop- ments in financial circles to-day were generally of a favorable character, but exerted no influence on tpeculation, which is practically dead for the time being. The McKinley letter of accep ance was re- ceived with 1avor, at least that part which referred to the currency question. More imporiant than this 50 far as the street s concerned was the an- nouncement of the engsgement of additional amounts of gold 1n Europe for shipment to New York. Posted rates for sixty-day bills were re- duced yoc to 84 8315, while demand bil.s actually sold as low as $4 833,@4 >4. So far as known neerly $10,000,000 gold has been engaged for importation to this country, and good authorities estimate the inflow during the next thirty days at twice this amount. On the arrival of this fresh capital money rates ought to weaken, asually is a bull srgument. To-day money on call ranged from 6 to 15 per cent until near the c o0se, when unempioyed bal- ances were offered at 1 per cent. J. P. Morgan & Co. were responsible for the break in rates from 15 to 6 per cent. While the market for stocks was in a siate of stagnation, the undertone, except for s slight period, was steady to firm. Western Union, Chicag, Gas and Tobacco were the weak spots, 'and_at_one time showed losses of 134@134 per cent. Near tue close the failure of John B.oou- g00d & Co. was announced, but as the firm had no outstanding contracts on the exchange it had no wterest. The market ruled quiet and steady 1n tone, with prices generally 14@l4 above yesierday's quota- ilons. Total sales were only 89,259 suares, in- sluding 19,000 St. Paunl. 14,700 sugar, 8700 Western Union and 6100 Burlington and Quincy. Bonds were dull and firer. Sales fooied up ‘e unusually small total of £369,000. CHICAGU MAKKETS, CHICAGO, ILL, Aug. 27.—A slight wave of firmness raised prices of wheat at the opening to- day Prominent among the reasons cited for the improvement were gold importations by Chicago banks, encouragement derived by some from the McKinley letter of acceptance and a firm stock market. The duration of the strength was short, however, the fear of the Sep:ember deliveries assuming imporiance as a factor and influen ing the other speculative options. Fine weather was reported_generally. The receipts were quite liveral, Chicago having 158 cars and the North- west 486, against 287 last Thursday and 699 a year ago. The Cincinnati Price’ Current reported no material change in crop conditions during the last week. Liverpool cables werequiet and steady. Local inspections from store amounted to 114,530 bushels. About the middle of the session prices broke on local selling, influenced by raiding of cora by a prominen: professioual. Bradstreets | sued a correction of the figures ou the world’ stocks given out on Tuesday, making them show decrease of 187,000 bushels {nstead of an increase of 319,000 bushels. Closing Paris cables were 20 t0 40 centimes lower for flour and unchanged to 10 ceniimes higher for wheat. Antwerp was 1214 centimes lower and Berlin 214@234 marks lower. Export clearances amounted ‘10 861349 bushels. December wheat ojened from t0ig Lo 60c, de- clined to 59c, closing at 5914@59%4c, Yac under yesterduy. Estimated receipts 1or to-morrow, 150 cars. CORN—Dullness attended with weakness were about the only features of the market fox corn early. In addition tothe sympathetic feeling of easiness petween it and wheat there was the cus- tomary report by the Cindinnati Price Current, which” to-day stated that crop indications were fully maintainea during the past week. Specu- Iators ar- fully acquainted with the brilliant crop prospects, but when reminded thereof generally sell a littls more corn. Liverpool cables were 14d lower. Receipts were 452 cars, and 187,298 bushels were taken from store. The market was raided toward noon by a prominent professional. prices declining somewhat sharply. Export clear- ances were 295,873 bushels May corn opened at 2534c, declined to 25@25Y4c, ciosing at 2534C, 3¢ under vesterday. kstimated receipts for to- morrow, 705 cars. OATS—The weaknessof the surrounding mar- kets did not affect oats. This market was sold heavily short earlier in the year, and as the crop will not fully realize earlier expectations, the short interest takes mdvantage of every oppor- tunity to cover. The strength of the market is quite easily traceable to this conditio: Receipts wer= 312 cars. There were no withdrawals from siore. kxport ciearances were 50,573 bushels. May oats closed 14c uuder yesterday. Estimated receipts for to-morrow, 305 cars. FLAX—Was steady, Cash ranged from 66 to 86tao; Norihwestern was lgc premium over Soutnwestern; September, 66¢; December, 70c. Rece pts were 116 cars. PROVISIONS—An easy Provision market re- sulted from a similar Hog market. Trade was local and largely professional. with little reaily at- tractive to it. The same disinclination to assume the carrying of Pork afier ~eptember continues o exist. Toward the close on a little covering, prices rallied. January Pork and Ribs each closed unchanged und January Lard 234c lower. 5UTTrR—The demand for butter continued urgen: and the supply light to-day. The feeiing was conseauently firm. Prices were unchanged. Creameries—Extras, 16%4c: firsts, 14%@15%g¢; seconds, 11@13¢; imitations, fancy, 12@.3c. Uairies—Exiras, 14¢; firsts, 11@12c: secoads, 10c.
