MCADIE, Local Forecast Official. NEW YORK MARKEIS. Financial. NEW YORK, N. Y., July 24.—Stocks ruled weak to-day, but except in a few instances the pressure to sell was not prenounced. For that matter the bulk of the stock sold according to good judges of the market was for professional account. Euro- pean specula:ors were inclined to reduce thelr lines of American securities and this liquidation accounts in some degree for the weakness here. The dominant influence, however, was the politi- cal situation. Mr. Whitney’s interview had a tendency to unsettie matters, as the ex-Secretary of the Navy did not take a cheerful view of the Presidential nomination, especially so far as the sound-money advocates are concerned. ‘The talk abaut a third ticket also had en un- favoravle effect, and the reports that the Populists wou d indorse the candidacy of Bryan added to the bear ranks. The street seemed to ignore the heavy deposits of gold for the day, about $1,500.. 000, which brings the total for three days up to $11,245,000. The fact that there wili be no gold shipments to Europe 10-morrow, owing to the re- cent agreement by the foreign bankers, was also passed by 5o far as effect on Stock prices is con. werned. The bears coucentrated their efforts on Maonatian, and the stock was forced down from 9354 10 9014, Inthe last half hour a firmer tone prevailed, and prices rallied 134 per cent in the case of Manbat- tan, 14@1 per cent in the remainder of the The industrials and grangers showed the 3 recuperative ability. Dun & Co. will say to-morrow in their weekly review of trade: The week began with extreme depression in stock and speculative markets owing to the heavy outgo of gold. Stocks fell. Tapidly and onMonday ruled lower than any time since the Venezuela alarm in December. The lowest average was $4509 for railroads and $46 02 for trusts, but at the close on Monday averages were $43 76 for raliroads and $43 60 for trusts. Then came sharp recovery with the union of banks to turn gold into the treasury and of international bankers to conirol foreign ex- cn;n'(& m“ the averages rose on Friday to $44 46 an Business of all kinds has been ereatly affected Dy the monetary conditions and is slower to {m- prove., The produce markets bave been seriously depressed. lard marking the lowest quotstions on record, corn falling to 32c, wheat 10 61.75¢ and cotion’ 10 7.12c. Theve has been a slight recovery in corn, s sixteenth on cotton and a cent in wheat, but the main cause of low prices remains, namely, of large crops with heavy stocks on Band. Nothing appears of encouragement in the industries. Fallures for the week have been 281 In the United States, nst 202 last year, and 29 in Canada agalnst 27 last year. BANKE CLEARIGNS. NEW YORK, N.
