NEW YORK MARKETS. warmer Friday. probably Financial. W YORK, N. Y., June 11.—The failure of sensational ramors current yesterday to ma- terialize 1=d 10 a general covering movement at the Stock Exchange to-day and the market was strong from start to finisb. The circulation of re- ports yesterday, which led to the neediess sacrifice of smail holders, was hot discussed. It can be stated that the maiter cannot be permitted to rest there, either, and a ready an investigation is on foot with the ubie t of bringinz the instigators of the false reporis before the governing committee of the Stock Exchange. Two members of the hoard are under suspicion, and every efiort will be made 1o probe the whole thing to the boitom. "Phere were no_traces of yesterday’s weakness at the opening of the market this morning and prices immediately opened 4@ per cent higher. This checked seliing for the long account and frightened the shoris inio covering. stock was forthcomiug at the advance and the bears were compelled 10 come in the market and bid for securicies. Under this process prices grad- nally lifted, and at the close the whole list showed guins o1 anywhere from 4 to 2 per cent. Cominiss on-houses were in receipt of fairly large orders, the first in weeks past, yesterday's breaks having attracted outside business. The main factor in bringing out the change for the bet- ter was the statements by people alleged to have close connection with the McKiniey combination that the St. Louis Convention will come out strongly in favor of souna money in the platform t0 be adopted next week. J. P. Morgan aiso came out with an_interview in which he dwelt upon the necessity for an out and ou: gold plank. Mr. Mor- gan _stated that in this event Kuropean capital would be again invested here. The belief that but little goid wili be shipped this week stimulated purchases. London had arumor that there will be large shipmenls of the metal from New York shortly. Local exporters, however, Know nothing about it and sald that everything hiuged on ihe position taken by the political parties at St. Louis and Chicago. The adjournment of Congress and the favorable Government crop report induced some buying for the long account. The greatest gains were made by sugar, the grangers, Louisville and Nashville, the Southwesterns, Tennessee Coal and Iron. As arule the best figures wers current in the final transactions. Manhattan was weak on the leasing of the Fourth-avenue horsecar line to the Metro- politan Trzction Company. Net changes show gains of 14@2 percent outside of Mauhatian. which 103t 33 per cent. ' Probably no one would have been more surprised than Sir Henry Bishop himself could he have foreseen that a simple mel- ody in one of his numerous operas would achieve such celebrity that at the present day, more than seventy years after it was first heard 1n London, it is still suag by leading prime donne at fashionable con- certs, jangled on street organs and loved by a vast public that knows nothing of music, properly so called, as the purest refiresenmlmn of the English spiri “Home, Sweet Home.” “Clari, the Maid of Milan,” the opera in which this favorite song occurred has long been consigned to the limbo of fo;iouen musical works, but ‘‘Home, Sweet Home” survives with un- diminished popularity, and is likely to survive when many more pretentious com- sitions have followed the “Maid of Mi- an’’ into oblivion.—Cornhill Magazine. DAt ey Decadence of Our Marine. The point has been brought out by a cor- respondent of a marine paper that it is no wonder the Spaniards were willing to as- sault and insult the United States Consul at the time of the adoption of Cuban reso- Jutions by the House. In Barcelona only two American sailing vessels were seen last year, and it is asked, “What reason had they for believing that we had a flag or a people cavable of defending it?”’ In connection with this, it may be stated that only two American vessels visited Liver- pool in 1895, and during the same year not. an American merchantman touched atthe cities of Hull, Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Portsmouth, Rotterdam, Genoa or Naples. The other side of this picture was shown in 1861, when the merchant fleet of the United States agzregated 5,539,813 tons and the flag was seen in every port of the world where ships go.—New York Tribune. ————————— THE CALL CALENDAR.
