Receipts of Wine at this port in April were 1,518,500 gallons, against 2,026,000 gallons in April, 1895. The falling off in receipts is possibly due to the holding back of winemakers owing to the severe damage by the recent frost: The re- ceipis for the first four monihs of the year were 5,711,800 gallons, against 59-8,600 during the same period last vear. . ; ‘The receipts of Brandy for the four months were 82,800 gallons, against 53,200 in 1895. Y., May 13.—Trading at the Stock Exchavse was characterized by firmness from start to finish and a higher range of prices obtained. London bought moderately of its fav- orites o the bellef that all danger of trouble be- tween the Umted States and >pain growing out of the Competitor incident had passed away. Foreign bankers also received intimations that there will be favorable developments in Transvaal matters shortly. Local operators were inclined to go siow because of the engagement of $1.500.000 in gold for stipment to-morrow and & belief that at least £2,000,000 more will be forwarded on Saturday. A good deal was said ngain_to-day about the con- tinued silence of Mr. McKinley on the currency aquestion, and this undoubtedly has deterred ope- TAtOrs 110m making new ventures. The declara- tion of the usual dividend by the Chicazo, Buriing- ton and Quitcy had a stim alating 1nfluence on the Grangers, which improved fractionally. The ad- ¥ance in prices ranged from 14 to 214, the Inter- nationals, Grangers and Indusiria's leading. Sugar was bought on_rumors of an early advance in re- fined and Leather preferred was taken on reports that the directors contemplate the payment of a dividend shortly. The dealinz during the last hour of business was attended with more anfma- tion thian at any previous time of the day. Speen- lation closed strong in tone. CHICAGO, Trr, ) 13.—The strength and buoysncy which attended yesterday’s trade in wheat was absent from the market this morning. Englisy markets rejected the stronger feeling in 50 far as appreciating in price was concerned, al- though their tone was firm. Liverpool's fallure to vance was one of the weakening points of this market to-day. Rans and showers for growing wheat and predictions by the Weather Bureau of additional moisture iikewise tended to disappoint bolders. The declaring of about 5,000,000 bushels of wheat contained in Armour’s elevators irregular by the Board of Trade caused some short covering, which afforded the market partial support. Receints at Chicago were 14 cars, and 57,118 bushels were withdrawn from store. ‘The North- west cars against 238 last Wednesday and 187 a year ago. Export clearances were fair at 282,617 bushels. Ciosing Paris cables were 10 10 50 centimes higher for flour and 5@15 centimes higher for wheat. Antwerp were unchanged, and Berlin 34 mark higher. The market continued weak up to the close, which was 54c under vester- day jor July. That delivery opened from 6414@ 64l4c to Bilhe, sold between 6335c and 63140, closing at Bi3c@B3Yac. Estimated receipts ior ow s Che tone of the corn market at the open- ing was firm, but the strength was not enduring, the easier tone of wheat eventuaily exercising in- fluence of sufliclent potency to cause prices to de- cline. Receipts were 110 cars, five less than ex- pected, and 65,755 bushels were_taken from store. Liverpool cables were quiet. Export clearances amounted to 443,218 bushels. OATS—Had a very good trade to-day, the under- tone of firmness of vesterday being still in evi- deuce. The exports of oats are having an effect on the market, “short” sellers dlspiaying less con- fidence while they keep up. Recelpts were 111 cars. Withdrawals from store were good at 130, 214 bushels. July oats closed Ygc under yester- day. Estimated receipts for to-morrow 140 cars. LAX—Was duil and nominaily steady. Cash, 86ac; May, 84c nominal; July, 8514c, nominal Sepiember, 87c bid. Receipts were 29 cars, PROVISTONS—For & time product showed a steady tone at practically unchanged quotations, but when late reports giving a weak feeling with 5¢ decline in hog prices were received, the market 1or ons gave way 10 4 less s:rong sentiment. The larger one - were emitting great volumes of smoke and some flames, and the smaller ones were throwing out quantities of water, stones and mud. The roar of the erup- tions could be heard twenty miles or more. R It is said that good cider and milk mixed in certain proportions have been success- ful in cases of long-standing sickness baf- fling all efforts of regular practitioners in Germany. ————— THE CALL CALENDAR.
