Y., April At the Stock Exchange to-day there was a further expansion in the volume of Lusiness, the sales aggregating 265,000 shares. The temper of the speculation was bullish, although'at the start the bears ham- mered the market on the strength of lower quota. tlons from London and the recelpt of selling orders from that center. The greatest decline was in Manhattan, which fell 134 to 109 on the passage v the Assembly of the ihree-cent fare bill.” For the same_reason Metropolitan Traction declined 1 10100. In the remainder of the list the losses varied from 14 to 34 per cent, the latter in sugar. The comparatively slight recesslon brought in numerous buyinz orpers and & rally quickly en- sued. During the afternoon the Vanderbilt shares led the market. There was free buying of New York Central, Lake Shore aud Canadian Southern by firms who usually do business for the Vander- bilts. The advance of 55@114 on this group gave encourazement to the bulls, who commenced to bid_in prices all around. Sugar sold up 17 to 1263 _Western Union, Missourl Pacific, Corisoli- dated Gas, the Grangers, Lackawanua, Distillers, American Cotton Oll, Reading and Wheeling and Lake Erie were all prominent, rising @3 per cent. The demaud for the last named was stimulated by the announcement by President Blair that the company had secured business for the season which will tax the capacity of the road, including the new equipment ordered early in the year. Yesterday was a livelier day then usual in min- ing stocks, both Comstocks and sodies advancing under active trading. Occidental rose to 81 40 and the other Comstocks were higher &1l around. Bodie s0ld up 1o 50c and Bulwer to 42c, the latter stock being particularly active. The close was lower, as will be seen below. On the bond exchange business continued active. San Francisco Gas advanced to $93 60 and Edison to $119 50, both being sharp advances. Giant Powder rose from 21 50 to $28. . The superintendent of the Grant mine reports that the third tunnel has advanced over 4 feet the past week, being now nearty 150 feet in length. The guartz is darker, looking better and carries more sulphurets. The Virginia Chronicle has the following about Occidental Consolidated: Three feet of rich gold ore was opened In the Occidental mine on Friday night in the west drifton the 750 level. The ore assays over £100 ton in gold, and the streax may prove a bonanza when deveioped. The dis- covery is very important and very encouraging. 1t was made in the ledge at & point 100 feet below thespot where the ore was discovered on the 650 level some time ago, and {s a downward continu- ation of that ore. The lowest assay of the ore showed a value of $80 and the highest run into the hundreds. No developing work has been done on the ore since the strike was made, but the chance for the ore 10 spread out from the face of the drift is good. Indications favor the belief that a big body of ore of considerable if noi great richness may yet be opened possibly in the near future in the Occiden- tal mine. ‘There is great scope in the mine for an ore aeposit of large dimensions, 8s is shown by the fact that three excellent showings of ore are now in evidence at three widely divided points. The twodevelopments above spoken of are 100 feet apart, one on the 650 and one on the 750 level, and the ore still has room 10 go down indefinitely. And there are two feet of $27 gold ore showing in the south drif on the 605 level, 180 feet south;of the tirst named- development. That it is not probable that bonanza of gold ore will be found in the unopened ground between and outside of these points cannos be sald. The slgns of ore in the Occidental just now are particularly encouraging, and if the mine does not show up a body of ore before long many people will be disappointed. The Alaske-Mexican Mining Company of Douj 1ns island. Alasks, has declared a _quarterly divi- dend of 10 cents per share, or 818,000, payable on tho 28th. The Alaska Treadwell dividend of 875, 000 will be paid on the same day. The American Tobacco Company has declared a dividend of 2 per cent, payable May 1.
