AGAINST A STONE WALL The Harbor Commissioners at a Standstill on the Rock Question. GOING TO OUTSIDE QUARRIES. Scientific Analysis of the Nevada Sandstone Mentioned in the Lowest Bid. The Harbor Commissioners seem to have run up against a stone wall in their quest for suizable masonry for the ferry depot building, and the stone wall stands. the bids received that of Charles F. McCarthy, secretary of the Pacific Bridge Co was the lowest, and, under the provisions of the special legislative enact- ment, can only be considered. His bid, or set of bids, wasas follows: Depotbuilding, to he constructed of Nevada sandstone or 1, $218,000; of Arizona red sandstone, of Oregon gray sandstone,$230,000. The Nevada rock, being tue lowest bid, s taken into consideration by the Com- ission, and Professor Hilgard of the University was asked to make a ic examination of samples sent him. lowing is his report: The rock has evide been formed by the f a voleanic mud consisting mainly * which, in flow 1pa; and minerals. f volca. 1 echytic thus characterized as a Larger crystals of glassy ite, plates of mice, and sof horn- also some | r and | 1 grains ¢ colored_quartz. Tie Arizona or Flagstaff sandstone is a red rock that has veen used in many build- ings in this State, and is highly reco! mended. But an objection comes in the | report that it will not stand the practical y in th 1s of a hotel in this | s of the rock ge stones _are dis- | ight of the great | ire of the climate. Iso stated at the walls of the | es Postofiice building, in which | had been nsed, had cracked, and | e surrounding the residence of erin this City was crumbling, Arizona quarry, who was fore the commissioners yes- id the failure of the stone to :e test to the faulty construction of and the mois ie fault has been found with the con gray sandstone, and one of the sivi-n is the Delmonico building on ell street. near Stockton, where it is the stone shows signs of disintegra- ted bids, while calling for Cali- fornia stone, were placed too high, and whatever the cesire of the board to use a home product, could not be taken into | ieration under the ] only the | t bid may be accepted. This is the wall in the way of the Commission. It is reported, however, that if McCarthy is given the contract he will substitute other stone if it can be done wichout ex- tra expense to himseli. Asitis the board vada sandstone offer or | 15 the sandstone deposit near in_this State. Professor Hil; the following analysis: 1 have examined samples of the rock from Stony Brook Cauyon, near Niles, and find it to | be a standstone, with grains of quartz, black | mica, limestone and feidspar. These are cemented togeth main by a zeolitic cement, toge: r with a pur icic ons The ininerals of w this rock is com- posed are hi to weathering and none of them are liable to change of 3| None of the rock contains any iron pyrites | which might discolor or disintegrate it. i The cement substance resembies closely that of concrete made with hydraulic cement, | and1t is therefore more liablé to harden than 10 soften from exposure to weather. From the chemical standpoint I consider the Tock a very durablé one. { William Farwell, the representative, | was before the board vesterday and pre- sented the claims of the Niles stone on the plea of a home production. He held that | the_specifications could nave called for a | California product, and 1t was in the vower of the board o have insisted upon that condition, withont going to Oregon, Nevada or Arizona for material that this State couid supply. Mr. Colnon stated that it would be well for the board to visit Los Angeles, Sacra- mento and other places wherc stone had been used in ler.e modern buildings and | carefully note how the material was stand- ing the practical test. Mistakes have been ! made even after careful test, and the ma- terial that was to last for ages in the walls of great structures utterly failed when put under the tremendous weight of great buildings. Attorney Ford of the board gave as his opinion that the Commission could safely enter into cne or more contracts for the _different subdivisions of the work desig- nated in the statute without at the same | time entering into_contracts for the con- struction of the Union Depot and ferry building. The board adjourned till this morning at 10 o’clock, when the subject of the Risdon Iron Works bid wili be considered. % 2y FOR THE HOME PRODUCT. The Manufacturers’ Association Protests Against Using For- eign Material. The subject of the material of which the new ferry depot is to be constructed is be- ing discussed with much interest of late. There is a large portion of the community whose motto is, ‘‘Patronize home indus- tries and home products,’’ and this ele- ment is very much opposed to having the proposed building made of Orezon, Nevada or Arizona stove. The Harbor Commis- | Teceive any artic | coutribu ai has been used. | | Bizne | 810, | Young (wife of E. | Mrs Byerly, San Jose 14 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1895 e sioners have received several protests against awarding the contract for any stone other than that qnarried in this State. The Manufacturers’ and Produc- ers’ Association has sent several such pro- tests, and the last letter, written yesterday, was more pointed and emphatic than a;\iy of the others. Assistant Secretary F. H. Dingle write: To the Honorable the Board of Harbor Commis- sioners—GENTLEME! ’n reference to the mat. ter of stone for the new ferry depot this asso- ciation desires to enter its most earnest protest against the acceptance of bids and awarding of contracis for stone for eaid building to be mined from quarries located outside of the State of California. There is, of course, no question but what stone can be secured from California quarries of superior quality, and such being the case it would seem to us that the placing of any foreign stone in the buila- ing which is to be the gateway to our City would be a great mistake. This magnificent structure should be, and we hope will be, a standing monument of the products of Califor- nia, 5o far as they can possibly be used. We understand that the lowest bid for this work is a bid based on using Oregon, Nevada or Arizona stone, and we would therefore most respectfully petition your honorable board to reject all bids received, and call for new bids, SpH ving California stone. Thanking you in advance for the consideration you will doubt- less give this subject, I am for the association very truly, F. H. DINGLE, GIFTS FOR THE POOR. The Public School Children Will Con- tribute to Charity This Year as Usual. The public schools will contribute as usual to give many poor persons a merry Christmas this year, and Superintendent Babcock bas issued the regular circular which is expected to bring tons of pro- visions, coal and warm clothing in pro- fusion, which will be distributed through the Salvation Army. In the belief that comparisons are odious mothing of that kind between schools is desired, and the collection and | distribution of gifts will be conducted with litile publicity as possible. The circular which was addressed to school principals yesterday is as follows: Ladirs and Gentlemen: You are authorized to s of food, clothing or money, me, that your pupils may e benefit of the poor. The or orders for the for | distribution to be made through the Salvation { Army. Notify Captain McFee, Salvation Army, 1139 Market street, if you wish a wagon sent for your contribution. Please see to it that no comparison of the of- | ferings of pupils, ciasses or schools is made. To be of most value to the children there should be ns 1 as follows. Very respectiully y A.
