CHICAGO, Trr., Dec. 4.—The line of the wkeat market exhibited signs of improvement this morn- ing. Various reasons were assigned for the more cheerful feeling, principal among which were the light receipts at Chicago, 191 cars, of which only one car was winter wheat; the reporied extraor- dinarily good demand for flour in the Northwest, and rumors of an all around good milling inquiry from the country for wheat. During the early hour further strength was derived from the New York clearances of w and flour, which amounted to 312,604 bushels ‘The total seaboard c PIG TRON—Quiet. COPPER—Dull. CORN—On very light receipts of corn, 149 cars, and in sympathy with the better tone of wheat. corn showed some gain. It was not enough to arouse enthusiasm, however, and as the buving was more for the purpose of securing profits on short sales than for long a unt, the support was, best, but indifferent. The New York circular of Henry Clews takes the following sanguine view of the immediate foture: “There are things looming up in the financial horizon whnich suzgest at least the possibility of a revival of speculation with the opening of the new vear. ‘Coming events cast their shadows before them,’ and _some shrewd ob- servers think the; already trace the ontlines of such shadows. Strange to say, these seeming sug- gestions of ‘good, times coming’ are traced in the Very movement ihat has lacely created so much apprehiension on the Bourses 0f Europe and to less extent in this city. “There is & mystery ol strength in the Kaffir speculation that deserves attention. The shares have 1ot fallen at efther London or Paris nearly so much as had been expected: and there has now come a sharpness of reaction in them that excites surprise. The scrutiny to which distrust has sub- jected them has publicly developed the fact that While many of the enterprises were worthless and more were overcapitalized or ancertain as to their results, yet the great specuiation. iaken as a whole. means tuat sources of gold have been discovered in Africa exceeding all previous findings in his- tory. “Tn other parts of the world also fmportant de- posits of the yellow metal have been unearthed, and in Colorado a gold mining excitement has arlsen which seems to imply really valuable dis- coveries. All this is imporiant, not so much for what it is in_itself as & branch of speculation, as for what it implies. It means that the world is to see forthwith a very important Increase in its supply of gold. No less an authority than the noted French_ economist. Paul Leroy-Beauliea, states fu The Forum that in two or thrée years the annual new supply of gold will amount to from $200,000,000 to 247,000,000, and that this output will continue for twenty-five to thirty years, and posaibly for fifty years. COINAGE OF THE MINT. The coinage of the local Mint in November was as follows: Double Eagles, $1,800.000; Eagles, $247,500; Quar er Dollars, $45.000; total, $2,092,- 500, against 52,360,000 in November, 1894. The coinage for the first 11 months of the calendar year was $23,117.218, against $28,016,656 for the same period in 1894. ¢ STOCKS OF LUMBER. Pacific Coast Wood and Iron gives the stocks of lumber and logs on hand November 1 at the differ- ent reawood mills of Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte connties as follows, against November 1, 1894; Logs, 46,800,000. against’ 52,500,000; Lum- ber, 86,750,000 feet, against 78,600,000 feet. This shows quiie a decrease for this year. PRODUCE MARKET. WHEAT AND OTHER GRAINS, WH '—The market continues steady, with a good demand for choice grades on Australian ac- count. The Helga takes for Cork 59,272 ctls Wheat, valued at $5 Concerning tne Australlan demand for California Wheat alocal trade journal says: “Australialike California last spring, had prospects for an unus large crop, and based on that, IArga engage- ments to arrive were made for Wheat tennage to move the crop t consuming markets. Again, like California, just before harvest, blighting hot winds 80 injured the crop that a deficlency instead of & surplus is founa, and -here is not suflicient Wheat insight. To provide the chartered tonnage with cargo is absolutely necessary, and Austrslian Wheat will continue to be shipped to Europe so long as chartered ships arrive there before cancel- ing date. To replace this W heat, that sufficient may be had for local consumption, supplies of choice milling grades are being drawn from California, and the de oy in Ausiralin’s usual expert 1o | South Africa s being made good by direct ship- | ments to the Cave from this port.
