The bidding Was DOt S0 active or spirited as at the close of the previous sales, but yet prices were fairly well maintsined, the shrink- age in values being nominal. Since the opening prices have been hardening Lo some ex ent and re- ports to-day are quite satisfactory. Locally trade has been disgustingly dull, the only business done for a month pasi veing sales of northern stock from Humboldt and Mendocizo at from 734c to 9¢, a8 to conditions. Defective San Joaquin and south- ern Wools are_unmovable at any price, hence the warehouses are well crowded with this kind ot Wool. The local scourers are not buyers for the time being.” Business was active for a day Or soIn conse- quence of the filling of an order for close on to 450.000 1bs. but things have since quieted down again. For the first 11 months of the year they were 1,300,800 tons, against 1,235,700 tons during the same period in 1894. The circular says: “The arrivals of Coal from Great Britain and Australia have been un- usually heavy during the month. From the first- named source the supply has been larger than in any corresponding period in the history of the port. Prices o all kinds of fuel consequently rule very low at present, manifestly 0 the advantage of the consumer, wh is invariably benefited when the importa lons of Coal from abroad are large.” Cumberland has again advanced.
