It may be supposed that the motorman, who was a very innocent-looking youth, did not know what it was. At any rate he stopped his car and gesticulated wildly to the motor- man of the down car to stop also. Then he whistled and called to attract the attention of the woman to the fact that she had lost something. He was a conscientious motor- man. He did not propose to let the cars of Buffalo Railway Company run over prog- | erty and destroy it if he could helpit. A gallant young man who was walking out to take the car ran around the front and picked up the object, which was the cause of the motorman’s solicitude. He did not follow the loserto return it to her, how- ever. In fact. it would have been hard work for him to haye overtaken her, for as soon as he had picked it up she rushed around the nearest corner and was making | the best possible efforts to disappear. The object was a brown silk garter with a nickel buckle. Thus it happened that one little garter blockaded the whale Buffalo streetcar system.—Buffalo Ex- press. P BRAVE LITTLE GIRL. Save Her Sister’s Life. Bright and pretty two-year-old Lizzie Bales, who at noon yesterday was as playful and strong as a mother’s heari could wish, 13 now lying at the point of death at the City Hospital, and the tender tiesh has sloughed from several places on her little body, the result of most frightful burns. Saturday afternoon about 2 o’clock Lizzie and her little sister, Minnie, 3 years old, were in the Kkitchen, en- joying their customary -émp, after their noonday meal. Little Lizzie presently found a newspaper, ard, tearing it into bits, she thrust the pieces through the grate of the kitchen stove and watched them burn. One piece fell to the floor, and, touching her calico dress, ignited it. In an instant she was wrapped in flames. Her brave little sister comprehended the terrible situation on the instant. Without a moment's hesitation she began the task of beating out the flames, unmindful of the danger which she herself was running, and vaying no heed to the intense pain result- ing to her own small and tender hands from the contact with the blaze, she stuck pluckily to her task until she had extin- guished the flames. When the frightened mother came to the rescue of her children there was the older daughter down on the floor putting out the flames with a courage" that would do honor to the strongest of men. It was a remarkable instance of a child’s bravery d it is no fault of Minnie’s that the con- | dition of her sister is so serious, When the flames begzan to ascend the | light dress of the unfortunate child, and | the fire came in contact with her young | and tender flesh, her screams of anguish were piteous in the extreme and her little face was distorted with pain. Before her sister could beat out the fire Lizzie's body | was a mass of burns, and the tiesh from | her hands and legs all raw and blistered. | Lizzie's agonized cries of pain and Min | nie's frantic cries for help reached the | mother, who had stepped out of the house | for a few moments. Rushing in and see- | ing what had occurred she grasped her | babe in her arms and ran to the North Ena | A. Peake, the | physician in charge, dia all that was pos- | bie to ease the pains of the sufferer. | He found that she was a solid mass of | burns from head to foot. The flesh was | literally burned off her hands and limbs. | Her entire body was in a frightful condi- tion, as was her head and face. Her hair | was entirely burned off. Her sufferings | were awiul and the doctors experienced | great difficulty in temporarily bandaging the child because of her violent struggles. All that could be done to ease her was | accomplished, and Lizzie was removed to | the City Hospital, where her death is| hourlv expected. Dr. Peake, who is accustomed to seeing such sights, says he never saw a worse burn. Lizzie is the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bales. who live at 823 Destrehan street. Mr. Bales 18 a moider employed at the stove foun. | dry of Bridge & Beach, at 501 South Main street.
