Following is a summary of the principal sermons delivered in the United States and Canada by the leading clergymen, priests, prelates, religious teachers and professors of the Christian faith. In every instance the full text has been carefully read and abreviated : INTELLIGENCE. No man has the right in this day and land to be a knownothing. Ignorance is a ' crime, if not high treason.—Rev. G. R. Robbins, Baptist, Cincinnati, Ohio. SELF-CONTROL. Human freedom rests on self-government. It one man can't control himself, 70,000,000 men can’t. Seventy million times nothing is still nothing.—Rev. Lyman Abbott, Brooklyn, N. Y. MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT. 1 would rather have high tax and high mor- ality than low tax and low morality. I prefer erooked streets and straight men to straight streets and crooked men.—Rev. Thomas J. Vil- lers, Baptist, Syracuse, N. Y. SENSATIONAL PREACHERS. I think some ministers who consume each Sabbath in saying some strange or sensational things about matiers not connected with sal- vation do a horrible act. The pulpit is for the word of God.—Rev. W. H. McMillan, Presbyter- ian, Allegheny, Pa. PERSONAL LIBERTY. Personal liberty is a delusive cry, for when pressed to its logical conclusion it means that the wish of the individual is to be taken in preference o the decree of the_social order.— ev. Henry Baker, Methodist, Newark, N. J. MARRIAGE. In choosing wife cloose & Christian, intel- ligent and educated woman. God help the man who takes & coarse woman for his wife. She will be & millstone around his neck all the rest of his life.—Rev. Nathan E. Wood, Baptist, Boston, Mass. SELFISHNESS. According to Jesus Christ, the object of this life is not seli-bappiness, it is self-sacrifice. You show me the man who cares only for him- self, and I will show you the most contempti- ble and shriveled wretch that creeps on God's footstool.—Rev. W. H. Pearce, Scranton, Pa. THE LABOR MARKET. Our labor market is already overcrowded. Thousands of men are out of work. Yet esch year an average of some 400,000 emigrants Come to this country to compete with our already unem;gloyed or poorly employed labor and deepen the struggle for existerce.—Rey, R. A. White, Universalist, Chicago, Il CHARITY. With the increasing prosperity of our people there comes an extra obligation, a responsibil- ity. Itis the responsibily of charity. Charity must go aiongside of wealth and prosperity. Out of what we earn and get there can be somethiug laid tHeach year for somebody else. —REev. Willlam H. O’Connell, Catholic, Boston, Mass. CORRUPT CITIES. Many of our cities have outstripped Sodom and Gomorrah, and yet the mercy of our Lord allows them to confinue. They are more cor- rupt than Nineveh, Babylon or Rome, and 1 less the Yeople arouse and purify them our cities will share the fate of those of old.—Rcv. Levi Bird, Auburn, N. Y. CHRISTIAN CHARITY. Plato was a great man, but show me his asy 1um for the blind. Show me Voltaire’s infirm ary for the feehle-minded. Show me Tom Paine’s retreat for the homeless. Show me Colonel Ingersoll’s home for incurables. You cannot do it; you will have to look to Chris tians for those things.—Rev. George D. Board- man, Baptist, Philadelphia, Pa. JEKYLLS AND HYDES. A man islike & pendulum; he can swing from the gates of heaven to those of hell in less than two minutes. He may be kind, loving &and gentle one moment, and some little thing may go wiong and make a periect demon of him in less than thirty seconds.—Rev. Dr. Os- trom, Lutheran, Louisville, Ky. WOMANHOOD, A girl must grow into her womanhood like a flower, and cannot be hammered and chiseled e like & boy. She must be reared gently and tenderly into_that character which is to be hers. On every mother's brow shines the same light that shone on that of the mother of Jesus. —Rey. James B. Kenyon, Methodist, Syracuse, N. Y. INDIA. Many people have the idea that the fnhabit- ants of India are barbarous and uncivilized, Never a greater mi~take. India is the home of the Sanskrit tongue, the parent of all other languages. Many of the higher classes spesk English with beautiful accent. India is the home of every deeg philosophy.—Rev. Dr. John Scudder, Dutch Reformed Church, Syra- | cuse, N. Y. CHURCHES AND SALOONE. Church membership and citizenship do not mean the same thing. If I were not achurch member I would be equally as responsible as citizen. Wickedness does Dot lessen responsi. bility. It is the duty of all citizens with tie right of ballot to rid *he countgy of the saloons and build up the church.—Rev. 8. 8. Wo ward, Baptist, Chester, Pa. GROWTH OF CHRISTIANITY. The church during the last hundred years has brought forth more children and adopted more orphans and is giving them diviner food than in any other one or five centuries of her life. Isee her now the glorious motkher, the holy Madonna of nations, pursuing her way across the globe, accompanied by her children who have risen up to call her blessed.—Rev, gkfl?rles F. Goss, Presbyterian, Cincinnati, 0. JAPAN. Japan affords a specially fruitful fleld for a liberal interpretation .of Christianity. The people are alert, intefligent, receptive. The war has been carried on t! rnugb the influences which have come into the land from Christian nations; and while there is a strong reliance on the native genius, and a belief that a national faith can be evolved, yet there is a readiness to adopt western eustoms and west- ern ideas.—Rev. Dr. Gunnison, Universalist, Worcester, Mass. CHRIST. Many have stormed at the bulwark of faith, the Bible, and e assailed abuse in the church aud have ridiculed Christianity and miracles, but none has come forward to assail the goodness and purity of Jesus. He is the faultless, the incomparable mau—the miracle of miracles; and tl not from indifferent {riends, but from skeptics and infidels alike. They have found in him nofault.—Rev. F.T. D, Bickley, Methodist, Wheeling, W. Va. EVIL. No personal devil is necessary to explain the presence of evil in the world. Evil and wrong are uim?l{ & moral vacuum, as death is the ab- sence of life and cold of heat Evil is not direct creation: it is not positive, and it has no past in creation. Good is the positive ele- ment, the omnipotent, and therefore this is a good world ana this life is worth living.—Rev. J. G. Jaynes, Unitarian, Boston, Mass. EXTREMISTS, The extremist originates, the conservative perpetuates; the extremist reforms, the con- servative preserves; the extremist is power, the conservative is control; the extremist is enthusiasm, the conservative is judgment; the extremist lives in the future, the conservaiive livesin the past; the extremist is tempted to optimism, the conservative is tempted to pes- simism; the extremist is in danger of becom- ing a fanatic, the conservative is in danger of becoming a fossil.—Rev. James L Vance, Prese byterian, Nashville, Tenn. AGNOSTICISM. The days of agnosticism are numbered, for already the method of science is being success- fully applied to religion, and the grand result will be the planting of the belief in God. Not on the basis of creed, dogma o Bible, but on a foundation that is unshakable. Agnosticism is only mental bewilderment, sure to vanish when men cease to regard the universe as dual and learn to recognize its unity.—Rev. Alfred W. Martin, Unitarian, Tacoma, Wasi. CHRISTIANITY. The religion of Christ is a reasonable re- ligion. It satisfies the mind after we have studied to prove it, as no other religion is ros- sible to do. 1t appeases the conscience, whicn no other religion can do. Itentersand fills the heart of man. It meets our everydey needs as no religion has ever done. Itisa re- ligion that will help a man, though he be un. worthy, while other religions require.a lrst 10 be'worthy.Rev. Iaac Clatk, Washing: n, D.C. GOD. The man who insists upon having a God whom he can inclose witmmhe ruinl'e- walls of his logic will have a God whom his logte has manufactured. The very fact that God cannot be compreherded in his mode of exist- ence is an irrefutable evidence that he is not the creature of man’s brain. The main point for us is 1ot to try to fathom that which is un- ::;h‘:m;l:}:, ?m‘tha find ?;n ufilmcien! to enable n the truth.—Rev. Ed, . Presbyterian, Portland, Or. 5 s l‘n‘r‘n;lun. nfidelity, with i spel of eternal nothing- ness, never had a 'nkaeehold upon the p‘zopfo than to-day. Bradlaugh fell in England and there was none to take his slace; Renan fell in France, aud of him the same thing is true; In- geml\ is about m‘;o from the stage of action ere in America and there is none to step into his eccentrie path; but for every one who falls in the ranks of Christianity, there are two good men ready to immediately take his plw..—i"- Dr. Euster, revivalist, Spokane, Wash. 1 3 |
