SHE ATE POISONED MUSH. MRs. LIBBY OF SAN FRANCISCO ACCIDENTALLY KILLED BY PHOSPHORUS. CAUGHT—A FIRE | S SIGN-BREAK AT GOLDEN GATE. NoTtEs. BERKELEY, CaL., Oct. 28.—Mrs. Carrie A. Libby, of 2222 Hyde street, San Fran- cisco, died at the residence of Mrs. George Hustenden, 1610 Todd street, Lorin, from the supposed effects of eating mush which had been cooked in a vessel used in the preparation of phosphorus for rat poison. Mrs. Libby called at the residence of Mrs. Hustenden yesterday afternoon and asked permission to pass the night there, stating that she had some business to transact with a man in Oakland by the name of Moore to-day. Late in the evening the visitor was stricken with what was at first supposed to have been cramps. She soon remembered, a friend at Lorin, Maud Brand, who keeps a chicken ranch, and that during the meal she had eaten a dish of mush. The theory was advanced this afternoon that the mush of which she had eaten had been cooked in a vessel which was once used in the preparation of phosphorus for | rat poison.. A physician was summoned, but before his arrival the woman had expired. Mrs. Libby leaves a divorced husband | in San Francisco and a son in British | Columbia. A search was made to-day for Maud Brand, at whose house the dying woman was supposed to have eaten the poisoned mush, but up till late to-night she had not been located. The physicians who know of the case put little credence in the “mush theory.” An inquest, however, over the remains will be held to-morrow morning at the Coroner’s office in Berkeley. | Sign-Breakers Caught. | A pistol-shot alarmed the residents in the vicinity of Berkeley station before day- break this morning.” The cause of the | trouble was that three men were perched ) on the top of Curry’s jewelry sign in the | act of tearing down the huge clock which | hangs suspended from an iron bar, where they were aporehended by Night Watch- man Parker. | They were under the influence of liquor at the time and begged so hard for release | that they were permitted to go, not until | they had promised to repair the damage, | however. OARLAND OFFICE SAN FRANCISCO CALL,) 903 Broadway, Oct. 28, | The happiest lassie in the Salvation Army two years ago now figures in a divorce case of which one of General Booth’s ex-lieu- tenants is the plaintiff. The parties to the Thimsen, known, while she wore the hal- lelujah bonnet, as Sister Jessie Mont- gomery. Four years ago Jessie was a girl 13 years of age and showed a greater desire to choose the broad path than the narrow one. Members of the army bearing of this undertook to guide Jessie in the pathway of safety. Their efforts were successful, and in due time Jessie donned the blue gown and poke bonnet. Her pretty face and sweet voice succeeded in winning for | her a host of friends, and before she was sixteen she was deeply in love with Lieu- tenant Henry Thimsen. Thimsen is a German who takes a very serious view af life, His nature istho very reverse of the wife from whom he now seeks a divorce. When the young couple were first engaged Thimsen was an ener- getic_worker in the army, but since that time he has fallen from” grace and now works in a bakery. The young couple were in no hurry to get married, but Jessie’s father and stepmother were anxious to ex- pedite matters, as they wished to move out of the State. Thimsen was not prepared to furnish the nest, so Jessie’s father cor- dially subscribed $50, in his desire to see his daughter settled in life. After three mouths of married life Cupid flew out of the Thimsen household. One evening Mrs. Thimsen disappeared from her home, and Thimsen, taking her actions much to heart, searched for her on both sides of the bay. To his great surprise he found her taking a minor part at the Grove-street Theater. He entreated with her to return home, but she refused to listen to him. She told him of ber deter- mination to become an actress and to pro- vide for herself. Some months ago Thimsen brought suit for divorce, but has been unable to serve the paperson his wife. Last week Mrs. Thimsen made a short visit to Oakland from Sacramento, where she is now living. Her presence soon became known to her husband, who procured a constable and served her with the vapers. It is very | line wheel, while he was left at home to | she declared her huoby was a silurian and | and New Mexico and may possibly take likely that Mrs. Thimsen will make no de- fense. FREE T0 DON BLOOMERS THE BARBER'S WIFE GRANTED A DIVORCE BY JUDGE ELLSWORTH, WILL NOW TOUR THE WORLD. MRrs. LuLu Laro’s REFORM DRESS Propuces TROUBLE THAT ENDS IN SEPARATION. OARLAND OFFICE SAN FRANCISCO CALL,) 908 Broadway, Oct. 28. { The jealousy aroused in a husband by his wife wearing bloomers and taking frequent evening rides resulted to-day in Mrs. Laro being awarded a decree of di- vorce. This is the first case in this county in which the reform bicycle dress has judi- cially separated husband and wife. The troubles of the Laros commenced several months ago, when Mrs. Laro pub- | licly horsewhipped her husband on Broad- way. Laro isa barber, and hiz wife found him in company with a handsome blonde and proceeded at once to administer sum- mary punishment. A few days after the barber brought suit for divorce, and al- leged all manner of improprieties on the part of his wife. Prominent among them | was the fact that she would be a new | woman, and preferred to tour the county clothed in bloomers and riding a mascu- wash the dishes and tend the baby. By way of defense, Mrs. Laro, through her attorneys, Waste & Stetson, filed an interesting answer and cross-complaint. To reduce her statements to a few words, objected to all manner of diversion on her Eart, no matter of how innocent a nature. She ably defended her bloomers, and de- clared that her refusal to part with them was the chief cause of dissension in the family. The case was bitterly contested on account of a little child, both parents being anxious to obtain possession of her. On_both sides many charges were made, and it evidently appeared to Judge Ells- worth that the weight of improprieties was in favor of Mrs. Laro, for in his judgment, rendered to-day, he said it appeared to the court that Mrs. Laro had sustained her al- legations, and issued a decree accordingly. | The custody and control of the child, Juan- ita, a pretty little flaxen-haired girl 2 years old, was awarded to the mother, and | the plaintiff is permitted to visit her at all reasonable times. Mrs. Laro will hence- forth be known to the world as Miss Lulu | F. Redmon, the court having granted her that privilege and made suitable provision for alimony. Miss Lu{u Redmon stated to-day that she intends to make an extended tourin | her bloomer costume through Arizona | in Europe. She will be accompanied by | Mrs. Cora Benson and Mrs. Alice Johnson of San Jose, Mr. and Mrs. Freeman of San | Francisco and Miss Lily Darcy of Oakland. A stay of five weeks will be made at Chi- cago en route, where Mrs. Laro has relatives. It was the intention of Mrs. Laro and party to start last Monday, but the delay of the decree postponed matters | for some days. Tke route of the party will be southward and thence eastward through Arizona and New Mexico in order to avoid the cold weather that would be met with on the northern route. M ALAMEDIS' ESCPE D. J.
