10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 1895 ST e e e s e e et B b IR L A e e e e s THE WORKMAN’S RAILROAD Members of the Co-operative Common- wealth Have Subscribed to the Fund and Are Sanguine of Succes: The California Co-operative Common- wealth is in receipt of lettersof a recent date from A. R. Sauer, vice-president and general manager of the projected San Diego, Pacific and Eastern Railroad Com- pany, thanking certain of its members for subscriptions, and stating that the prospects are that work will commence on the road this fall. Mr. Sauer writes that as soon as $100,000 is subscribed a call will be made and the work begun. He states that the citizens of San Diego have offered a site for the railroad shops, and have tendered the right of way out of the town. They are also bearing all preliminary ex- penses, and ask for no return. Three Mmembers of the California Co-operative Commonwealth have subscribed $400, and are sanguine of the work promised to con- | tinue “‘during life or good behavior” of the subscribers. » The Commonwealth Home on Natoma street is crowded to its utmost capacity, and there are always more applications than places. . A sample box of delicious grapes fully ripe arrived at the Southern Pacific offices in this City yesterday from Yuma. These grapes were grown out on the Colorado desert under irriga tion, but under favorable climatic influence ripened early and in great profusion. Besides they were sweet and full-bodied, resembling the best varieties of grapes irom the Mediter- ranean. Prices showed no particuiar change yesterday until the ¢ when they improved slightly.
