Besides being a great astronomer, Sir Robert Ball is a man of figures. He tells us what it would cost to reach one of the most distant stars, supposing a railway were constructed to it from London, and that the low rate of 1 pence per 100 miles prevailed. If the intending passenger could present to the booking clerk the whole of the National debt of the United Kingdom—a sum_exceeding £670,000,000, —he would require 5000 huge carts to convey it in sovereigns to the ticket office. Even when the poor clerk had accom- plished the ]enfithy task of counting the “fare,”” he would want another £103,000,~ 000 before he would feel justified in issuing even a third-class ticket. and there could not be a_ return one for the money.— Scottish Nights- SAN FRANCISCO “CALL.™ BUSINESS OFFICE ofthe San Francisco CALL— 710 Market street, open until 12 o'clock every night in the year.
