June 25.—The stock mar- ket to-day in the main was firm and higher. While the trausactions were by no means large, it was no- ticeable that the improvement in prices brought out comparatively few offerings and that room traders are still disposed to work on the buli side of the accoun! The only weak spots were New England, Chicago Gas and Tennessee Coal and Iron. U.S. Leather declined 135 per cent, but re- covered. New . England, after opening 134 higher at 53, broke to 50, rallied to 5134 and closed at the lowest of the day. The disposition to sell is explained by the fact of the Vanderbilt interests in the shares and thatthe property 11 henceforth be operated for the aiding of New , New Haven and Hartford and New York Central roads. 1t was reported that the average price paid for the control of the New England was in the neigh- borhood of 35.
