14 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, J E 1, 1895 MAILS ON CABLE-CARS, The Market-Street System Is Ready and Willing to Co-operate. OPINION OF THE POSTMASTER. He Thinks It Would Be an Improve~ ment, but Fears to Broach the Subject. The carrying of mails on streetcars is a question to which Postmaster McCoppin has given much thought. It would be a boon to outlying suburbs such as Rich- mond and the Potrero, and more especially to places on the line of the San Francisco and San Mateo Electric road, such as Bay View, Oceanside and Colma. A similar system to that in operation in St. Louis, Boston and other Eastern cities might be adopted. The railroads could run a mail-car at certain hours during the day, and the clerks could sort and have the letters all ready for delivery at each stopping point on the w: In talking about the matter yesterday Postmaster McCoppin said: ““I have dis- cussed the matter time and again wity Mr. Doyle, my chief deputy. We recognize what a big saving there would be in the matter of time; but then there is the ex- pense and prevailing on the authorities to take the necessary steps. “Yes, interposed Assistant Postmaster Doyle, ““it would take us a year to get the Government to do anything, and then we would be two years more getting Mr. Vining of the Market-street Railroad com- bine to come to term: “The scheme is practicable,” continued the Postmaster, “and would be a great benefit to the public, but just at present it would be an uphill task to get it estab- lished.” “San Francisco should have its mailcars on all the cable and electric roads just the same as they have them in Cleveland, Boston and St. Louis,’” saia E. P. Vining, manager of the Marke reet cable system. “You can teil Postmaster McCoppin for me that I will gladly co-operate in every way to make the venture a success. We ask no unreasonable remuneration, but of course we are not in business for the fun of the thing, and a fair price will have to be paid for our services. “*A special car for the use of mail clerks and carriers could be run at almost as little expense as the present system is carried on. In outside stations the mails could be delivered at a saving of half the time now required. In Boston the letters are sorted in the car just the same asin the railway mail service, and whenever a point on the road is reached where there is a station the mail is delivered, and the letters that have been posted are collected in a very short space of time. “No one from the Postoffice has called upon me in regard to the matter, but as soon as Mr. McCoppin or his deputy does so0 I think I'can show them that the ven- ture would save the department money. Another thing they ought to do is to make arrangements for their carriers to ride on all car lines. We will sell them tickets at reduced rates, the same as they do in St. Louis and Boston, and in that way the men can ride at any time, and_thus cover twice the distance during the time they are on duty. “‘As [ said before, if the matter is figured out I think it will be found that we can give the postal authorities a mailcar on each of our, lines and sell them tickets for their carriers for probably the same money they are now expending on a service that is not one-half as efficient as the one you speak of. We will only be too glad to co- operate. and when Postmaster McCoppin applies to me I think he will not find my demands exorbitant.” UNSUBSTANTIAL DIET. ‘What Two of San Francisco's Stallfed Musicians Say About Their Rations. The following communication was re- ceivel. vesterday from the late concert master and the harpist of the Scheel orchesfra: Mr. asd Mrs. John Mnr?unrdty former con- cert master end harpist of Scheel’s orchestra, will Jeate for Australia on the 15th of June. They wil_play in Honolulu two concerts and stari fron there by steamer Monowai on the 4th of Jaly for New Zealand, to begin there a concert «our through the colonies. The prospect of the Scheel concerts for next scason seems anything but pleasing, and it Jooks s if San Franciscans have at last tired of every night concerts. It must be admitted that we have been appreciated very much; in- deed. we have seldom met with such ensthu- siast'c people as in our concerts here the last WO seasons. However, itis an undeniable fact that mu- sicians are only mortals and have to eat and drink like other citizens and can therefore not live on promises of the Metropolitan Musical Scciety, end it will not be very long until we find_that the so-called stallied musiciens of San Francisco have left the City one by one. Of course money will procure the artists from the East if they cannot be fouud right here, and it is thereiore not to be inferred from our words that witl. the departure of the soloists of the orchestra concerts inust cease to exist. Mr. Scheel is still here and he will try again. Thanking you for your kindness, we remain, ete. MR. AND MEs. JOHN MARQUARDT. WAITING IN MEXIOQO. Captain Johnson Needs Extradition Pa- pers for George Bartels. The case of the schooner Star of Free- dom, which was stolen from Oakland Creek by George Bartels, is hanging fire in the Mexican courts. Captain W. Johnson, the owner of the craft, went to La Paz and claimed her, but as no extradition papers ha(}l’. been forwarded no attention was paid to him. The skipper wrote to his brother, W. H. Thornley, and that gentleman laid the matter before the United States District Attorney. On turning upsthe files it was found that Bartels was indicted on May 17 last, and that a request for his extradi- tion had been forwarded to Washington. This will come here in_due course, and will be forwarded to the United States Con- sulat Lz Paz. In the meantime Captain Johnson is running into debt and his schooner is still in tEe hands of the Mexi- can authorities. ————— Fisher Ames Sued. Fisher Ames has been sued by F.H. Merz- bach, assignee of the State Insurance and In- vestment Company for $560 for rent of prem- ises at 218 and 220 Sansome street, Rudolph Released. Jake Rudolph, who was arrested on March 5, and charged with assault to murder, was yester- day released from Erlsan on a bond in the sum of $2000, sworn 1o before Judge Low. REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS.
