N. Y., May 22.—There was a slight increase in the volume of business on the Stock Exchange to-day, but the tone of speculation was in the main heavy and a large majority of the stocks traded in show losses on the day. While there was nothing especially depre; in the situ- ation, the local traders were mostiy onthe bear e of the market, and that. with liquidations and sales of the short account, m: downward motion. Little was done in the market for the foreigners, it being settling day in London, but there was some slight setting by the arbitrage houses. A raid was made on distilling, believed to be fn the interest of an inside clique which desired to shake out some weak holders. The advance in wheat was made use of to attack the grangers and the short interest in this group was largely in- creased. Sugar was subjected to some peculiar manipulations by the controlling power, which sent the stock 3 per cent to 119%%, the highest record of the year, then dropped it to 11714, with a closing rally 6f 14 per cent, restricting the net loss 10 13 per Gent. ‘it was in the grangers in which most advances were made, but in the final dealings they showed most weakness, and the market closed with a depressed tone. Stories of 10ss were more numerous than ever, coming from Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and even from Kentucky, which had not previously joined in the cry. The WOTst resuits came from Indiana and Iliinois. Kansas is not counted in the above, as its crop had been given its quietus a month ago. when it was taken for granted that 20,000,000 bushels or 50 would about represent what is ex- pected of it. Under these influences the market opened from Td34c 1o 74¥sc for July, or from e 10 134c per bushel higher than it closed yesterday. It sold off again to 74%c. but the commission- houses were all loaded with country buying orders, and on every break the dispatches to buy ten, twenty and one bundred thousand bushels scemed to multiply and there was no resting price up o 12 o'clock, about which time Brads reet’s reporis came in and the price was 77c.
