TLL., May 20.—Wheat—The freezing weather since Saturday gave wheat its opening push. The start was most confusing and irregular. Brokers within a few feet of each other were buy- ing and selling wheat simultancously at 72@72%ac for July. Inless than five minutes it had risen to 78%c¢, in another five minutes it was down again to 7234¢, and in another five minutes more it had jumped again to 736kc. The Signal Service issued a bulletin about the time of the opening which did not tend to soothe the minds of the shorts. It reported killing frosts on Sunday night in Wisconsin. Michigan, Dakota and Nebraska, and predicted for to-uight frosts in North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Wisconsin. The foreign markets were but slightly apprecia- tive of the bullish state of affairs ruling here. Liv- erpool early cables reported an advance there of only 1d per cental, with half of that_lost before the market closed, according to a private dispatch. ‘The expectation of heavy Russian shipments was glven by the Liverpool cables as reason for their ack of sympathy with the advance here. The Paris market went its own way without the slight- est regard 1o the great strength displayed bere, flour and wheat being both quoted lower by from 10 t0 20 centimes. After the fluctuations recorded above, the price bobbed up and down half & dozen times between 73¢c and 733%c¢, but got out of that rut et 11:15 and ook & Jump to T4l4c. 1In the latter part of the session the price rose to 745sc. In . the last five minutes of the session the complexion of the | market was changed completely. S0 many teic. s were being received from St. Louis, Toledo and the Northwest, stating that the reports of damage were eithier greatly exaggerated or en- tirely false, that people Laving a_good profit in long wheat thought best to sua-ch it. The market slid from 745 down to 73c like Jexd from 2 shot tower and the closing price was 737sc. The corn inarket was as much torn up and nervous as wheat. The frost was the motive. July, which closed on Saturday at 53%ac, opened this morning at from 54@5ljc, and #lmost in- stantly thereafter it brought 55c. 1t s00n dropped 1o 53%4c, but again recovered to 55¢c. It was at 55c near the close, when wheat began to show the white feather, and it _declined in abont four min- utes from B4%4c to 58%%c, closing at the latter ice. pflA very nervous and unsettled market was ex- perienced by the oats traders. Prices followed the - movements of wheat and corn. The early ad- vance carried prices up frum 3¢ 10 5kc above Sat- urday’s closing prices, and the deciine brought them back or within .a very small fraction of the same. ‘The provision market started strong at 10c ad- vance for pork and 734c for lard and ribs. The bog market was firm, and the advance in wheat and corn gave provisions their send-offl. Pork opened at $12 55, rose to &;8 and closed at $12 8233. July lard from £6 90 reacted to $6 80, rose 1o $7 and _closed at $6 Ribs from $6 40 advanced to $6 55 and closed at 36 45. The leading futures ranged as foilows: Wheat No. 2— Highest. Despite the favorable conaition of the leading mines as shown by the weekly summary of Com- stock operations the market broke yesterday. Con. Cal. & Virginia sold down to $2 35, Ophir to $1 35, Norcross to 91c and the other stocks in proportion, the noon informal session showing the weakest market prices. On the 2:30 o'clock call the market steadied up again somewhat, but was easier again at the close, as will be seen by the quotations. NOTES. ‘The official letter from the Occidental Con. mine for the past week says that the winze started in the. north drift on the 500 level has been sunk 12 feet; total length 82 feet, bottom in ore assaying $37 60 per ton. 5 The Overman and Yellow Jacket assessments will be delinquent in office to-day.= The Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Company and Contra Costa Water Company paid monthly divi- dends of 15 and 40 cenis per share respectively yesterday. In the Chollar the stopes on and above the 650 and 550 levels show little change. In going south from the latter the pay ore is lower in grade. They extracted during the past week 282 tons and 1800 pounds of ore, the battery samples 0f which aver- aged $29 14 per ton. In the Potosi mine the raise from the 550 level is up 64 feet. The top shows a streak Of ore 2 feet wide giving low assays. From this upraise they saved during the past week 16 tons of ore, which averaged $23 40 per ton. "The west drift from the Ward shaft on the 820 level of the Bullion mine is in 1651 feet. The face 18 in porphyry. /. The face of the south lateral drift on the 420 level of the Aloha Con. is in porphyry. During the week the Silver Hill mine yielded 12 tons of ore of fair grade from below the 50-foot level. Siicalsn millsd 6 tens offors: Balllommrodiced 38 2 Con. Cul. & Va. has made another bullion ship- ment, valued at $11,786 69, making a total of $23,681 22 thus far shipped on the present run of the Morgan mill, with $11,500 in bullion in the assay office and 4 large clean-up to make in addi- tion before the account for the fiscal month closes.
