WHEAT AND OTHER GRAINS. WHEAT—The local market is in a bad way, being seriously handicapped by the higher freights and that “old man of the sea” known as the syndi- cate Wheat. Either one would be a serious draw- back; but both together hang like a millstone around the neck of the market and prevent it from advancing. There was a clean-cul rise 0f over 2c at Chicago yesterday, and an advance at Liverpool, but this market did not budge an inch. It could not under the circumstances mentioned. So we have the spectacle of the Eastern and foreign mar- kets advancing day after day and the California market at a standstill. It was an evil day for the Wheat trade of this State when the so-called “syn- dicate’ plunged into specnlation a year or two ago. Spot_quotations are undisturbed and there is no business of any consequence on shipping account. No. 1, 85@87%gc; choice, 8834c; lower grades, 30 @83%c; extra cholce for milhng, 9215@97%zc B ctl.
