The trading of his brokers was D0t heavy, and consisted of moderat May on soft spots, and corresponding sales of July on the bulge. He was called heavily for margins by several houses and responded with eiacrity, margining May wheat up to around 62c or 63¢ per bushel, it was said._ Closing cables w market closed at 5815@b814 for May. Corn was very quiet and prices practically re- fused to move during the first hour or o of the session, but later the great strength of the wheat market brought in buying orders and fluctuations after that were over a much wider range. The opening price for May was 455c and a few sales were made at 451pc. 1t kept beiween those prices most of the first half hour, then rose to 46c, dropped again 10 4534, advanced to 45 @45%¢ and closed thes ter fluctuating for a time be- tween that and 4554 There was a £0od general busine: the market for oats. The main feature was the changing from May to June. The result was an ad- vance of %4c in the price of June, while May closed barely steady and ruled easier princially. Armour sold freely early in the session. The firm- mess in wheat and corn governed the finctations in the more remote fotures, all of which ended at an advance. May sold from 28145@2814c 10 28¢ up to 283jc and rested at 2844c. CROWN;POINT.—Started a north drift from the fourth floor of the stope on the 700 level to con- nect with a raise from the east crosscut. 1t s now out 33 feet and the face isin porphyry. The raise from the. east crosscut from the south lateral drift on the 700 level has been advanced to a total height ot 30 feet and stopped. The top is In & mix- ture of porphyry and streaks offlquartz. ‘They are now prepariug torun a south drift from it to connect with the north drift mentioned above. During the past week they have extracted from the openings between the 600 and 700 levels and from the 600 level 710 tons of ore, which has been sent to the Mexican mill for reduction. The aver- age sample battery for the week was $10 63, of which $9 50 was gold. o BELCRER.—On the 300 level the joint Belcher 'and Segregated Belcher south drift is in 151 feet from the shait. The face shows porphyry. During the week they have hoisted and stored in_ the ore- house at the mine 44 tous of ore, the average top car sample of which shows an assay value of $27 19 per ton. SEGREGATED BELCHER.—On the 200 level from the south lateral drift & southwest crosscut was commenced during the week which is now over 8 feet, the face in porphyry and quariz of no value. In the drain tunnel at a point between chutes 1 and 2 they are extracting some ore of fair grade. & The Virginia Enterprise says: “The situation in Con. Virginia, which was fully described in the last letter of Superintendent Lyman, is_creating much_enthusiasm in mining circles. So far as known the new ore :body which is being followed and which is apparently improving as progress is made on it, is not interfered with by any old work- ings. There is now cnoush ore in Sight to warrant starting the mill soon, and the proceeds from the new body will reach a very respectable figure. There is little news to be obtained from the other uiines qn the lode. Work is being pushed rapidly in the drift on the 550 level in ihe Oceidental mine. This drift Is expected to get under 1he ore recently discovered on the 500 level about the last of the month. On the 500 level the drift to the north- ward still continues in good ore, and as work pro- gresses from day to dsy more good rock, assaying from $40 10 $60, Is shown up.” The Merchants’ Exchange Bank, which has been in liguidation for twenty years, has declared a dividend of $1 per share, payable immediately. The North San_Jusn Gold Mining Company of Nevada County has levied an assessment of 12 cents per share, delinguent May 6. ‘The output of the flodle Con. mine for the week ending April 14 was 143, tons of ore from the openings between the 300 and 400 levels. The estimated value of the ore is 340 (o $45 per ton. The south drift above ihe west crosscut 400 levei has cut 8 inches of ore, which prospects about $18 perton. The porth drift 42 feet below the 300 level has bunches of ore in the face that prospect well. They started an uprsise in the south drift and connected with a drist 22 feet below the 300. level. Theseam of ore in the raise is of good quality. They also started a drift north from the winze from the south drift 20 feet below the 300 Jevel. The seam of ore in the face is smali, but of very good grade. The east crosscut from the south drift on the 400 level of the Mono mine Is in porphyry. In the Bulwer Con. mine during the week end- ing April 14 fitteen tons of ore were extracted | from the stope above the north drift on the 150 level and from the seam above the main north drift, ‘The ore from the former point is of poorer q; The seam above the main north drift 200 levelJs eight to ten inches wide and prospects from §20 to $26 per ton. Crushed dur- ing the week at the Bodie tannel mill 170 tons of ore. Average battery sample, $21 54 per ton; tailings, $6 61 per ton. BOARD SALES.
