CHICAGO MARKETS. - 'CHICAGO. TLL., April 4.—After a rather lifeless session_wheat ‘wound up with a bounce to-day . closing e higher on the reports of the heavy cash bBusiness. May corn alsp sold Yc highe onts Ysc lower aud provisions at moderate ad- vances. The wheat market opened at about the same - ‘price as it_closed yesterday but weakened in the course of the forenoon and declined from 14c to _c. “The feeling was not radically weak, how- ever, for at each decline there were enough buying crders uncovered to cause rapid vpward reactions to an extent equal 10 the previous declines. The domestit Teceipts were considerably smaller than of late and that, following upon the heavy export clearances of Tuesday and Wednesday, had an effect upon the speculators which prevented them Yrom being enthusiastic sellers. Their inclination was rather to buy on small declines. “The primary market receipts were only 158,000 bushels, against 221,000 a week ago The foreign markets were about unchanged. The Cincinnati Price Current remarked that wheat required more | molsture, and the signal service intimated there wus & probability of its getting more soon,a low barometer prevailing in_Nebraska, Montana, the Dakotas and Minnesota. That, and some rehashing of the Argentine wheat situation, formed the staples vf the morning gossip. In the afternoon, it became known that a good inquiry for cash wheat for shipment existed. Nearly every bandler of the article was approached by people who had orders to buy, and sithough a_considerable quantity was worked, # very much larger amount would have been placed if the hoiders had been willing to ac cept the previous current rate, which was ic below May. Seeing the extent of the demand the owners of | the grain naturally advanced their prices and much of that which was sold was at &4c under. A tele- ‘am from Liverpool reported a decrease in wheat gland aid Europe, and on April 1 the total sapply in the positions referred to was 20,200,000 | _bushels less than on April 1, 1894. STOCKS NEW YORK, N. Y., April 4.—The Evening Post’s London cable says: The coin and bullion in the Bank of England increased only £14,000, al- though £ 000 in gold was imported for the { week. Thecash has gone into home circulation in connection with the quarterly payments, and also, it is hoped. because of a slight revival in trade. The details of the movement of gold for the week are £806,000 bought from the open market, iefly from Paris; £150,000 imported from Egypt; £80,000 from Austria; £100,000 from Antwerp: | £11,000 from C e and £11,0M0 exported to the Continent. The decrease of £1.500,000 in public deposits is due to the quarterly payments to the | civil service and official salaries. The stock markets were stagnant to-day. The of a discus: n in the French Chamber on vptian questions resivicts business and the tone bullish.
