CHICAGO, March 12.—The Government report was the whole thiug in wheat at the opening, and there being no possibility of any but a bullish con- struction being placed on the figures an immediate advance of 2 cents per bushel was not unexpected. May, which closed yesterday at 5454c, and appar- ently weak at that, started this morning at from 3634@56%4c. Notwithstanding such an unusual advance over night there was less noise and excite- ment than accompanied the little 14c jump on last Suwcurday. The smaller shorts covered their wheat. May slid off during the first ten minutes of the ses- on to 561, but worked gradually back again i 8654c, and such moderate quantities as were o fered for sale up 1o noon found ready buyers at from 5614@5614c. Cables were higher, French crop damage reports were repeated and Northwestern receipts were light. Bradstreet's visible statement did not affect the market 10 aay great extent. It showed that stocks east of the Rockies were_ 1,878,000 bushels smaller than a week ago, and 729,000 bushels on the Prcific side. Thé prices did not give indica- tions of dropping materially, there being shorts willing o take all the offerings of long wheat up to about 15 minutes of the close at around 5734c. During the last moments of the session, however, the ofierings became more Liberal, and May closed at 563;c. Corn—The market was very strong at the open- ing and continued firm throlighout the session and for the same reason that wheat was higher—the bullish Government report. During a_heavy gale of wind one after- noon last fall a Bmokl{n gentleman in feeble health was strugeling to reach his home, aided by his wife. Just as they reached the corner of a street a window-blind was torn from a house by the wind and dashed to the ground just in front of them. . “Good heavens!” he cried, “that was a narrow escape for us, Hannah.” ““If it had struck us it would have killed us both,” she said, trembling. The two stopped for a moment to ex- amine the blind, but just they_were scrutinizing it the window above was opened, a touzled female head was thrust out and a shrill voice shouted : *‘Look-a-here! You needn’t think you are going to carry that thing off, 'cause it belongs to this house.”’—Boston Budget. e .
