Jt was reported this morning that 58 persons had been lost, but reports this afternoon indicate that over 100 lives were lost. Among the rescued is Stephen Crane's wife, who was nearly dead from exposure. It is said the steamer was unsea- worthy. BEAUTIFUL. There were several hunded people at t ity hall last night to bear the joint debate between Candidates Wheeler and Reeves, for congress from the First district. It was a very lively debate, too, and both men got somewhat personal in their remarks. Mr. Reeves was the cooler of the two, Mr. Wheeler losing his temper to a degree. The crowd seemed to be for Reeves, but as to who got ‘‘skinned’’ in the argu- ment, it depends entirely on the prej- udices of the hearer. The Wheeler men claim that Wheeler got the bet- ter of it, while the Reeves men claim the opposite. The candidates are billed for a speech in Graves county today, and r.
