Wan First Introduced Into the Royal English Navy in 1765. ‘The epaulette was first introduced {nto the royal navy of England by an order issued in June, 1795. It isseid, indeed, to have been introduced into the service ng to an incident that occurred in France to some British naval officers visiting that country in 1787, during the pence after the American wer. The officers found that the French sentries did not carry arms to them, though they did so to some British marine officers who Accompanied them, and who at that time wore epaulett By the 1795 order admirals were to wear two epaulettes, with one, two or three silver stars on each, for rear, vice and full admirals respectively. Cap- tains over three years’ post wore plain gold epaulettes, those under three years one on the right shoulder. asters and commanders wore one epaulette on the left shoulder, but no other officers of junior rank wore them at all. At the next alteration of naval uniform in 1812 all captains and commanders were given two ep- aulettes, captains of three years’ post having a silver crown over a silver anchor only, and commanders plain epaulettes. ants were now, (or the first time, given one epaulette to be worn on the right shoulder. until June, s at pres lieutenants. It is well known that Priene is in Asia Minor, and that the modern city of Samsoun occupies its ancient site. Several years ago an English expe- dition unearthed and studied the tuary of the city, built by order of Alexander; but its ruins, although inte were abandoned, and they have since been despoiled by the inhabitants of the neighborhood. In 1895 the Germans resumed the ex ploration of the region in behalf of the Berlin museum, at the expense of the Prussian government and un- der the direction of a young architect, Wilhelm Wilberg. The work of ex- cavation is already sufficiently ad- vanced to enable us to judge of its rare importance; a whole city is being unearthed, in almost as good preser- vation as Pompeii. And this is the more important because up to the present no similar diseovery has ever been made that gives precise indica- tions of the general arrangement of a Greek city, or its public monuments, or its individual dwellings. The city thus exhumed is assuredly of the pe- riod of gi t Greek beauty; the etreets cross at right angles and are laid out w the greatest regularity, and we ¢ tify colonnades, the- aters, mar sho} and houses with ecorations and in- terior arrangement. South of the temple of Minerva has been found the agora, surrounded with great colonnades, while opening on one of its corners is a small square edifice somewhat resembling a theater and constituting perhaps the place of meeting of the city council. It isan samira preservation, and 16 row of seats can be see in place Worthy of note is a vault in one of the walls—a t) extraordinarily rare in Gree} tecture. We should add, g. that among structur ave heen entirely humed is a whose scene is intact, which w toubtless some of the pr solve nnected with vf the Greek the- ry Digest. SUICIDES ON THE WATER.
