Attractions Everywhere, aud the Working Men Had His This 1s Labor Day, and if appear- ances are to be relied upon, it has been appropriately commemorated by the hundreds of laboring men and their families in Paducah, There were various attractions both on this and the other side of the river, and each attraction seemed to get its quota of the crowd. Across the river elaborate pre} tions were made for # good time, and many people went over. At La Belle park there were picnic parties and bicycle races. The b becue was declared off, as the candi dates could not be secured for the occasion, to hold their joint debate. There was also a good time to be bad at Ramona park, and the street cars did a good business, ‘The railroad men and the employes of nearly every industry were given « holiday, if they desired to take it, The city was full of men early in the day, who were io holiday attire. The chain gang was given a boli- day, and was presented with several fine watermelons by the mayor. Need- less to say the feast was enjoyed, not that they don’t feast every day, but because watermelon was a juxury to many of them, especially the colored prisoners, here was a very small force of workmen on the streets, and at work on the sewers. All who desired were given a holida, This afternoon the stores, with few exceptions, closed, and quite acrowd went out to the bicycle races, despite the fact that the weather was sume~ what threatening. There will be races tomorrow alse. The postofiice and banks were closed today, only one delivery being made at the former. Atthe govern- ment building, everything was very dull and wuinteresting, About i o’clock this afternoon a storm came up and threatened to break up the various attractions, and there was considerable alarm among maoy of those who were present and intended to go. A Tennessee River Man Is Left in the Lareh, He Reports it to the Officers—She Ran Away With Another Man. Tom Weaver, a farmer from up the Tennessee river, came to the city this morning in a skiff, accompanied by his wife, and a friend named Will Settle, of the same neighborhood. He left the couple in a skiff, and came to the city after something, When he returned, he found that they had both absconded, and imme- diately started in pursuit. He could find no trace of the couple, and reported the elopement to Officer Gray and Marshal Collins, The officer advised bim if his wife liked some one else better, and ran away with him, to let her go. Weaver said be didn’t care much about the woman, but did not want Settle ta have her. He described her as being about 19 years old, dressed in white, and one-eyed. The officers think they will recognize her by the description, but at last accounts the recreant spouse was still evading her hubby.
