Msjar Reed, of Savannah, who was stopping at the hotel, received the following telegram yesterday from one of his chi! “Ma critically ill, Come at once. (Signed,) M. Reed." The major went up stairs to his room to prepare to go home and fell dead from stroke. A few minutes later this telegram came: ‘Ma died 3:30 o'clock. (Signed,) M. They stand in a circle, and alternately draw the stuff up their noses from the palm of the hand of one of the crowd until it is all gone. Seripps-McRae Service, San Francisco, Aug. 16.—This “that Patrick Corbett, the father of the pugilist, bad shot and killed his wife and himself at 5 o’clock this morning. Seripps- McRae Sere: Asbury Park, N.J., Corbett was told of murder and his father’s suicide at 11 o'clock today, He was boxing with O'Donnell when his wife broke the terrible news to him. The shock stunned him and he fell to the floor. His trainers carried him to a small room and placed him onacot. At first it was thought he would have hysterics and a physician was sent for who gave him stimulants and he soon became calm. He says but lit tle of the awful tragedy and is unde- cided whether to go to California cr not, but it is doubtful if he goes, as it takes five days to make the jour- ney. His trainers don’t think the fight will be postponed, though the trag-edy will do Jim no good. Wat- formerly of this city, news of respects to that of Will Coughlan, another young ex-Paducahan, who was killed last Thursday. Watson was stabbed to Memphis Sunday night by Ollie Courson, a dissolute white boy. Courson had insulted a lady ac- quaintance of Watson’s. This led to a quarrel and incidentally to a mur- der. The victim was reared near Florence station in this county, but lived here most of bis life. Four years ago he went to Memphis to work in a furniture factory, He was 36 years old, He left.» family. His slayer escaped. Coughlan was killed at Birming- ham, Ala., in a fight over a young woman, he having taken up her cause when another man spoke dis- paragingly of her. The negro was kept ina stable guarded by citizens until the policeman ar- rived. He was locked up.
