Capt. Voight is having consider: ble trouble in securing mea to work his grayel pit at Lawton’s Bluff. He had 9 gang of negroes getting out the el and was doing admirably, when some miscreant posted a notice last Saturday night that the negroes would have to stop or Capt. Voight would suffer the consequence. The negroes were go frightened at thethreat that they could not be induced to return to work, They have told most every negro in town and it is impossible for him to get a negro with courage enough to venture up to the pit, The famous Lee line of steamboats with headquarters at Memphis, is one of the most famoys and successful organisations of its kind in this coun- try. The Robert E. Lee, its inde- fatigable and popular president, has made it what it is, and the business of its fine, fast, popular boats is con- stantly increasing. Some time ago, id Howard, the well known boat builder, built the large, flae side wheel passenger steamer Hobert R. Lee for this line. Qaly a few mouths ago he built another large fine side wheeler boat, the James Lee, and now he has built another steamboat a stern wheeler—for the same line, and she 1s ready to leave for Mem- phis on her maiden trip. The new boat has been named George Lee, and is certainly one of the finest and handsomest boats Howard ever built. Copt G. W. Miller, the veteran steamboat man, is dead at Scranton, Miss., Capt, ‘:Natyral’’ Miller as he is best known, is the oldest, and pro- bably the widest known river man ip the coutry. He bas made Louis his home for over seventy years. C: Miller was horn in Pennsylvan' 1810, His second wife was Capt. Mary Miller, the first woman ever granted a license to pilot a steambo: Capt. Natural’? Miller received his nickname years ago through his river associates, because he persistently in- sisted that he was a natural pilot all others of his profess- ion, he began life as boat floater, and followed that vocation until late in the fifties, when he learned the bells and how lo steer steamboats hecom- ing a fulleledged pilot. He avoumulat- ed means, and bought extensive tracts of land, His wife, Mrs. Mary Miller, was a courageous hard-wor! ing woman, and when it came to standing watch at the wheel, she could outlast any of her male col- leagues, Hundreds of stories were printed of Mrs, Miller's exploits with * Jall the houses of worship tomorrow, steamers in the bayous and small Streams of the South, Mrs, died about four years ago. Capt. Miller has been in bad health for a number of years. When his steam- boat, the Lyda Norval, sank at New he was standing on the nd in his excitement bit his lower lip. Blood poisoning set in 4nd has since given the old captain much trouble: About four months ago Capt. Miller left Louisville, thinking the southern climate would agree with him, DEPARTMENT. James Marie The Mayfield baseball team will cross bats aj with our boys Mon- day at the Rowlandtown park. The troops have not as yet arrived, bat are expected tobe herein ample time. The last engagement was a naval battle in which the boys from Graves got slightly the worst of it. But everything points to a hot con- test this time, Governor Bradley refuses to inter- fere in the case of Robert Blanks. The sentence of the court is to be tied out, and at this moment to discuss thh ‘probabilities of bis guilt or innocence, or the administr: of justice, would have no bearing on the matter whatever, He is ta be executed according to the verdict of the court, and that is something. The greatest goverament is that which teaches us to govern ourselves. The excursion which was to have gone to Metropolis last Thursday night failed to materialize and there- by hangs a tale of woe, Several of our boys bad prepared to have a high old time down the river that night. All possible ar- Tangements were made and some went to no small expense to make the trip one of comfort and pleasure But the evil hand of fate spread an angry cloud over the sky which bore every evidence of gn approaching storm. The flashes of lightening subdued their ardor, They didn’t go. They couldn't go, The boat dida’t go, and now they have thst old tired disappointed feeling. Well, boys remember once isn’t always, and that while the lamp holds out4o burn, another day may retura, A COMEDY OF ERRORS. Quite a comedy was produced on South Seventh street yesterday after~ noon, when two young men, one tingle and the other married, cap- tured the third and fastened a bach- elor’s button on the waistband of his trousers. Of course the captive was single and really needed the button, and the part the young married man took in the affair was only a demon- stration of his sympathy, but for the other single man who assisted there is hardly an excuse. It seems that he too was attempting to show his aympathy for this young man while in his own heart he was nourishing the secret hope that an early wedding would justify the part he was taking. But he was single. That was enough. He had no sympathy to waste on others, and, however soon he may quit this life of single blessedness there is no justification fur the joke he was trying to play on a fellow bachelor.
