Believed That the Brave Admiral Now Holds the City—The Charleston Has Arrived With Reinforcements and the Ladrone Islands Are Ours. Seripps-McRae Seryice. WASHINGTON, July 5.——It is believed here that Admiral Dewey may have taken Manila yesterday. WASHINGTON, July 5.—The navy department yesterday received a long cablegram from Admiral Dewey confirming the announcement of the arrival of the American troops and the seizure of the Ladrone islands by our ships. Ia the absenee of more definite information it is assumed that the American tlag was planted on the island of Guahan, one of the Ladrone group. he chief city of the islands is Guaban. It is exceedingly well fortified for such a small place, and affords one of the best hurbors and coaling stations in the Pacific ocean. About six months ago the Spanish government strongly fortifled the island to prepare for the emergency of an attack. The island of Guahan will be used as a coaling station. It is be- lieved that some of the artillery which was taken on the City of Pekin in the first expedition was intended to fortify this island sfter its capture by the American troops. It is thought that the Monadnock will remain at Guaban as a permanent guardship for the islands so long as it remains under the American flag.
