If he made his Lawrenceville address,1n which he pointed out the dangers, as he sees them, involved in the policy towards which events are rapidly ca trying this nation, with the idea of putting himself again in the front as @ veacher, he did so knowing that he will not be called upon to go before the people upon a platform opposing territorial expansion. That question will be settled as a war measure and permanently in the next few months. The occasion, however, has given Mr. Cleveland the opportunity to emerge from bis retirement and ag: to pose as a leader. His appearance willdo much to shatter the charm that as attached to the name of Mr Bryan for the lasttwo years. It will demonstrate to the Democrats who yoted for Bryan in 1896 that there are other leaders equal to him, of which Mr. Cleveland is by no means the least. This is all that Cleveland expects to accomplish by his recent utterance, and that he has already done, — oo THE AMERICAN SOLDIER. An instructive incident occurred at the landing of the American army at Baiquiri. That pomt is the termi nus of a short riilroad. The landing of the America’ s took the Spaniards hy surprise and they retreated very suddenly. Before their flight they attempted, so the story goes, to dis- able a locomotive standing with steam on the track by disconnecting the coupling rods, the throttle, lever and several essential parts, burying some and throwing others into the sea. ‘Two engineers bappened to be with the advance squadron of the Twenty- second infantry and the troops went for the locomotive with a yell, The soldiers, hunting sbout for the miss- ing parts, found vised others. One engineer acting as fireman and the other at the throttle, in twenty mioutes they rao her into Juragua, five wiles distant, with the tender full of sharpshootere, delirious with enthusiasm over Yau- kee ingenuity, at which poiot the soldiers captured a large amount of provisions. This story well illustrates the great effectiveness of the Am ry soldier as a Gighting quantity, He is some and impros skirts, all wool..... sas skirts, green and blac’ “Where American soldiers are buried, there the American flag will float, and to remain, and we will take the responsibility of Oe ev eeeee Se, 1oc and 12'¢e s12'se Pre fi and 7 ec and roc +025¢ seeeee25C, 35¢, 39¢ and soc revere i seeeeg8e and 95¢ oa 72 ETE eS , and brown and $2.98 + 98c , 1.90, 1.95, 1.98, 2.25 and up seeeBhe 12¢, 24¢ and 25¢ THOMPSON... equal to every emergency. Ifatrain crew is wanted it is found among the volunteer army. If a bridge is to be repaired, the mechanics are found Whatever is necessary to be done can be accomplished by the Ameri- can soldier, Hence an American army isa storehouse of latent en ergy, exhaustless in its resources and \irresistible in its power. While will- ; ing to be a part of a vast machine cr orgatization and glad to be such when an army is to be crushed or & city taken, the American soldier never forgets his individuslity or that his every mental faculty as well as his physical being belongs to his country. Thus the unobtrusive sol- dier becomes the hero of some act of bravery and daring, or rises rapidly settling the questions involved. * * “Whatever may be done-—whatever policy may be adopted—I do not believe that our action will in any manner endanger the soli: ity and perpetuity of American institations. DEMOCRACY’S TRIALS, Events are moving so rapidly that the free silver Democrats are gettivg bewildered. They had flattered them- selves that Grover Cleveland was po- litically dead; that under the leader- ship of William Jennings Bryan, they had forever retired their former lead- er, who had become to represent to their minds all that was hideous of party treason, corporations and the single gold standard. They also re- joiced to know their idol, W. J. Bryan, had by bis Omaha Exposition speech, placed himself again in the front by formulating an issue around which the shattered hopes of Dem- ocracy might rally. It is the unexpected that happens, and such was the case when ex-Pres- ident Cleveland made bis recent al- dress in which he placed bimself alongside of Mr. Bryan on the plat- form of opposition to territorial ex- pansion, With Grover Cleveland and William J. Bryan on the same plat- form and both seeking the leadership of their party, there can be but one result—William J. Bryan must stand aside. Such is the horrible picture now silver Democrat. Is silver to be laid aside in 19007 Is W. J. Bryan to be shelved with the 16 to 1 theories? Is Grover Cleveland, the hated leader of the single gold standard adherents, to become again the standard bearer of Democracy? These are some of the questions that are now pertinent, aud they give some idea of the troubles of those Democrats who are opposing territorial expansion ; who want tosee the flag hauled down that now floats ia triumph — before Santiago's walls and in the harbor of Manila, OPEN DAY AND NIGHT, The Standard Saloon at 115 North Fourth street will be found open both day and night.
