Several months ago he went to Texas to locate and make his fortune, and settled in Texarkana. He lived there for about four months, and a few weeks ago was standing in a saloon door when there was a fight outside between two toughs, In the melee a pistol was discharged, and the ball struck Townsend in the side, and came near killing him. He has not yet recovered from the wound, and as soon as able, he left Texas for a more salubrious clime, He was given a pass on the Fowler to Evansville and went his way rejoicing. Washington Stroots, first time he had opened his mouth and said something since those me- morable words—‘'Don't give up the profile—it ain't there,’ or words tu that effect. It reminds one of the famous words, ‘Don’t give up the sbip.”” As told in yesterday’s Sux, there are a large number of people in the lower part of the city, where the sew- ersge has been finished, who desire to connect with the mains. They were allowed to do this under the old council and under Consulting Kogin- eer Elliott, but as soon as the new city engineer got in, be said ‘‘nary a tap, boys, nary atap.’’ The result is no one has been allowed to tap the sewers but Mr. C. E. Grindley, at Clay and Sixth, and be secured a special dispensation, as it were, from the mayor. The mayor wrote the engineer a letter a day or two ago, asking why people were not allowed to get the benefit of the sewers al- ready constructed, and after a day of deliberation, the engineer sent in the followiog last night: Hon. J. M. Lang, Mayor, Paducab, Dear Sir:—Your communication of the Ist was duly received. other matters has prevented an earlier reply. He (Mr. E,) no doubt expected the pumping station to be completed as svon as possible, thereby making it practicaple to make connections with all houses. As the pumping station is at pres- ent no nearer completion than whin lott. made bis report, the im- ability still exists, and until the pumping station is completed I cannot advise the covnection of any houte with the sewers, ‘ From the fact there has been no detailed plans made for the purpose which are very essential in a sanitary point of view, as well as the future] care and attention of the There should be very de for ventilation both in and out of the house. What would be the result if everyone was allowed to connect un der existing circumstances It is possible the river may rise above the valve in the sewer, placed there to keep the back water out, before the pumping station is finished. — Y« sewers would soon be filled with se erage which, in a few season, would be a bearable, creating gasses which would escape somewhere and under present | conditions would force itself through the (water) stench traps into the house. With the closed manholes aod no vent pipes in or about the house. where else could or would i escape? At present the best and only way to gratify the citiz¢ns who are ious to connect with the sewers my jadgment, will be to force Mr Lion White, the contractor, to finish the pumping station as soon as it is possible to make him do it, and in the meantime make and pass ordi nances governing all connection and out of doors. Thinking it best, 1 bave consulted the chairman of the board of health in regard to the above, and he fully endorsed my opinion Very respectfully, J. T. Posttewarre, City Eugineer The absurdity of this tlunsy text is apparent to alkwell 1X- pres informed people, In the first place, no pump- jag station, which seems to be the rock upon which the engineer tuils his objection, is at all necessary jus now. There is nothing to pump And there would not be uoless the river were up to the 40 foot mark, a stage everybody kvows is never reached at this season of the year. | will not be that high, judging the fa- ture by the past, until next January or kebruary.
