Boston, Mass., March $1,.—The legislative commitice on labor has a hearing on the the reduction of wages in cotton factories at the state house this week. Agent W. Southworth, of the Massachusetts mills of Lowell, took the stand. He said that when a Southern manufacturer claimed that times were hard he meant that he was making but 20 per cent., where he used to make 40. His con- cern was negotiating a contract for China goods to he made at its Lin- dale mill in Georgia at a price which would just cover the cost of manu- facture in Lowell. Day ed | would mean wages are 30 per cent. less than in the North; that is, price per hour, On the piece price the difference varies from 28 to 42 percent. The material costs from one-half to three- quarters of a cent less for the South- ern mill than it would av the Nortb, mainly from the saving of the freight. The product of the Massachusetts mill in Lowell is using 18,000,000 pounds per year, so that difference $180,000 per year sav- ing on the product, or 10 per cent. on the capital. The saving at the Georgia mills is $70,000 on its 7,- 000,000 pounds product. Then a great deal of this product goes to China via Vancouver, and the freight is $1 a bale less from Lindale to Vancouver than from Lowell. Mr. Southworth said there was no special objection to the Massachu- setts system of taxation, The trou- ble was mostly from threats of fature legislation. Mr. Southworth said it would never do to underrate your competitor. The growth in South Carolina and North Carolina, Ala- bama and Georgia was simply as- tounding. To a question he respond- ed that Fall River was not in it with the South on printcloth. The South can make print cloth for one-half less than Fall River, and that city must put in Norfolk looms. He was rather sarcastic his references to news- paper advice to the Northern mills to make finer goods, which was what the managers had been doing a long time. ‘They tell us to put. in Nor- folk looms,’’ said he, ‘‘but it would | cost $500,000 to change the machin- Jery in the Massachusetts mills, and where is it coming from?"* Odd Fellows’ Anniyersary, The seventy-seventh anniversary of Odd fellowship in America occurs April 26, and the Paducab lodge will probably celebrate the occasion.
