Two ex-saloon keepers are now keeping each other company in the Chester state prison. _ These are John Lemley, sentenced to ninety- nine years several months ago for the murder of Ben Ladd, and John Steele. sentenced a day or two ago for fourteen years for robbing Wil- lis’ saloon and the postoffice at Brooklyn, Ill. ‘The trial came off Monday at Me- tropolis and Steele was convicted. The commissioners fixed his pu ment at fourteen years, which is a pretty big sentence. Steele was always held in disrepute and for along time ran a saloon at Brookly! He was caught in the act Jot breaking into 4 shanty boat, with a colored accomplice, and the latter finally gave the whole thing awa, «4 it seems they had been burglar- izing for some time, Little was obtained from the post- office, but from Willis’ saloon $50 or more was taken. Ben Martin, the colored ex-con- viet who was an accessory in the theft of forty bushels of wheat from Mr, Shelby Corley, of Unionville, was al- so sentenced to fourteen years, Frank Martin, his son, was sent to the reform scheol for one year, and darry Jackson was acquitted, Martin’s heavy sentence is proba- bly due to the fact that it is his third ‘ONLY ONE DEATH. It is thought that the remainder of the family will soon be well again.
