WRITTEN AT RANDOM, Col. Chas, Reed, of the Palmer, in speaking of the execution of two boys from Marshall county at Black- land, Miss,, for deserting during the id yesterday: “Dll never forget that execution. The wen, or rather boys, for they were mere boys, were screaming aod crying while the preliminaries were being arranged, and I'll tell you it was hard {enough to have to watch such a scene, I would have beeu on the detail that fired the shots that ended their lives had {t not been for Dr. Brooks. gent of our company, and when or- dered to furnish a detachment of men he always took them from the com- pany alphabetically, On this occas- iun I would have been detailed, but he skipped joy name, and that is why | I was not ghe to sel ecutioner. as wilitary *° North Sixth street is one of the most frequented in the city. All the hacks, wagons and other vehicles ly pass over it en route to and the depot, and just now its condition is such that the street rol- ler could do good work on it. In fact it could be used nowhere to bet- ter advantage, The ice man, who was all smiles last week, is now distraught with dis- pleasure, The cold wave has bad unmistakable effect on his business, and fifty pounds ofice, left on the door step, will not resolve itself be- fore the cook or porter arrives, into a mere damp spot during this sort of weather. ‘The soda-water map, two, is not bubbling over with satisfaction and happiness as he was a few days ago, for with the fall of the mercury there bas been a very perceptible fall in his trade, But then, as one solilli- quized yesterday, ‘‘it’s all ina sum- mer-tim e.° ° Col, Jobn Van Culin Is just back ‘|from New York, Washington and veral eastern watering places, where has been “living high. In Washington he experienced the nov- elty of rubbing up against greatness, having met most of the great men at the Capit The great men were courteyus to him, and he reports that they all chew Lactic Pepsin. He attended the funeral of the late Sen- ator Harris, and wept at the thought of the Senator's loss in no longer being able to masticate Lactic Pep- sin, which has not yet been intro- duced into Paradise. In New York Col. Van Culin was presented with a fine South Ameri- can Cactus which is said to be the only one of its k Uni States. An interesting case is now before Justice Winchester. A prominent young married lady of the west end was warranted a few days ago for poisoning her neighbor's chickens. It appears, however, that the prose- cution is based merely on a misunder- standing of the facts. The lady's husband claims that he put out the poison for rats, and notified the neighbors of what be had done, in order that they might keep their chickens at home. If this be true, the warrant will likely be dismissed, as there was no malice in the case. Some people, however, claim that the gentleman even had a right to go so far as to put out poison on bis own premises for the sole purpose of killing the chickens should they en- croach on his property. Chickens occasion almost as much unfriendli- ness among neighbors as the town cow. oe . d}by Mr. Quite a number of Paducah people are branching out as song writers. The latest melody is one composed Irvin S. Cobb, of the “News,” and Prof. W i the south-side musivian, “Fly High, You Buzaar quite catchy, and may be sung at one of the park theaters before the season closes. oe . ed # motorman yesterda: is nothing that makes a than to ask him to pay his fare, es- pecially if he bas already done it and the ticket stuck in the fare box 80 it could not be seen.’’ ‘The knight of the brake aud key had just come near having to dis- play his muscle to one of these frac- passengers who resented the inquiry it he had dropped his nickle in the slot.
