Hopkins......,, Evansville NoTEs. The big towboat Alice Brown with it least 25 empties passed up this orning en route from New Orleans to Pittsburg, A slight rise struck this place last night, and the river came up 2 inches thus making the gauge read this a, m. 6.6 and rising. The Cairo daily packet, Dick Fowler, departed for the above named as usual thisforenoon at 8 :300' clock carrying a good load. The big sidewheeler New South from Cincinnati bound for New Or- leans passed down Jast night loaded to the guards with freight, The Cumberland river packet H. W. Buttorff is due here tomorrow morning and leaves on ber return to Nashville at 10 o'clock. There was a strong up-stream wind blowing this morning, which made several of the local packets arrivo oor " | done, y eoumenit bebind time, besides mak- ing the river rather rough. The towboat Grace Morris after being inspected yssterday left in the afternoon en route up the Teancssee river after a tow of ties. The Ohio river is rising from Pitts- burg to Cniro, the Cumberland is swelling at Nashville and the “ennes- see river is rising from Chattanooga to Johnsonville and big water is ex- pected here by the last of the week. The two local packets, John 8. Hopkins and City of Clarksville, which were due here to leave for Ev- ansville and Elizabethtown this morn- ing, were not in port at a late hour but are expected to be in and away for their destinations before night. ‘The steamer Gus Fowler arrived here this morning with one barge of wire in tow, which she recovered from the wreck at Sister's bar and after taking this tow to Cairo the work at Getting out the wire will be comple- ted. She tied up at the tow head here and transferred the wire from the barge onto the steamer. A good sized freshet is reported to be on its way down the Ohio which will without a doubt make the river climb the bank here severalfect. The big Mississippi is also on somewhat of a rampage and the river is rising yery rapidly at St. Louis. This is also expected to make a few feet more water here at this port, and river men bave no fear at allot a freeze up but look for good water now in a few days. FASHION AND FANCY. Late Notes on the Correct Things in Ladies’ Dress. “It seems litle short of desecration to ont up and «nip up much elegant mate- rials into small patches and steips merely for the sake of sewing them to- gether again upon the same fabric, said an artistic costumer, as she hesi- tated, shears potsed in air, over a roll of rich velvet. “But from all indica- tions this is about what we are con ing to, and that very shortly.” The edict haa gone forth for pipings and cordings, narrow folds and straps and graduated sections of the same material as the dress or some suitable trimming goods. But all of us who have had any extended experience have ned, snd sometimes to our sorrow that what the designer and the manu facturer propose is oftentimes made very short work of by the fastidious or capricious consumer, who may may not fancy the new style, and, not liking it, will have none of it. ‘The up-to-date woman is 6 well suti* with her plain, stylish, trim-lool ing and comfortable skirt that she will make @ very womanly struggle before she gives it up and goes over (o stri and patches, And when all is said and CABLE COMPANY, | 314 BROADWAY, Quick and reliable service guaranteed. The skirt is A very easy affair to construct. It is women are able to turn out very cred itable garments of this wort, Besides, ome skirt will answer for several waists, ond if the skirt is of good mate- rial it serves for many occasions. skirt of gray camel's-hair, The waist is of clan plaid velvet, with puffings of rilk the color of camel's hair, The yoke 4s of closely shirred silk, the puffs of the sleeves are of silk, the lower and from the yeke over shoulders and fronts fall silk tabs edged with velvet The belt and collar are of velvet with puffings of silk. Another costume is of olive brogdeloth, ‘fhe sides of the watst are of the cloth, the yoke is of old-rose silk in very close plaitings The tops of the sleeves are of the cloth, the lower portions of old-rose velvet with edgings of black velvet. From the yoke to the waist line in front and hack are graduated sections of rose vel vet edged with black, and down the front on either side to the hem of the skirt extend panels of the rose and These panels are about four es wide at the waist-line, and hes wide at the foot. Shou! der ruffies of old-rose and olive almost cover the sleeve putts, Another pretty waist is made of pale bine and black yelvet and bengaline The waist is of bengaline, and close fitting. From the sides of the collar in a straight line to the bodice, the fre is cut away, and a vest of bengaline is fitted in, This is crossed and recrossed with narrow velvet ribbon, the use of which ot the present moment is simply a rage, There is @ V-shaped point of velvet running from the collar down into the vest, and a very wide, folded corselet belt, also of velvet. The ben ea ey haye seven narrow ruffles edged with velret ribbon, These rufiles cover the space from the ahoulder-seams ta ih Below these the sl are fitting; the rolled-over in edged with velvet ribbon, The fancy for fur trimming seems to have run mad, and ermine and sable are the favorites, Narrow bands of fur cover the seams of ekirte from waist-line to hem, or are set row upon row around the lower portion of the skirt There. are also models with the front breadth almost entirely covered with narrow rows of fur trimming. Waiste have bands of fur from shoulder-seams to bodice-point, and although the com: bination seems @ trifle incongruous, fur and lace and fur and gauze or chiffon are frequently seen, Eton jacket and little cutaway fronts of fur bre popular for house dresees as well as street use, One of the most elegant costumes of the season is made of olive and black striped velvet with bolero fronts, 0 rolled-back collar and deep cuffs of ermine, This 1s @ oalling costume, and with it Is worn a black velvet cape lined with ermine and @ standing collar of ermine.
