Under such circumstances the market was active and strong nearly the entire day. The rush to the buying side of the market began as soon as trade opened, and notwithstanding that Dutch, Greek and Belglan requirements were said to have been about filled, the bulls contizued in con- trol as a result of reforences to food short- ages In Great Britaln and In allied coun- tries, and to ditficulty of imports from Aus tralia and India. Besides, European crop ad- vices were generally unfavorable and it was announced that owing to extraordinary shortage In Argentina the sale of wheat there would he prohibited unless at above a fixed minimum price. Increased marine war risk {nsurance and an unconfirmed report that an American steamer had been sunk led at one time to a selling drive In the wheat pit. The effects on the market, however, soon began to wear off and appeared to be almost forgot- ten after the fact was established that the vessel In question was flying a French flag. In corn the scantiness of rural offerings tended to bring about an advance, which was glven further impetus by a forecast of rough weather. The strength of wheat also way a decided element In favor of the bulls. Onts responded to the gains in other cereals. Some export business was said to have been done. | Higher quotations on hogs and grain lifted the provisions market. The best de- mand was for lard.
