The thieves got $200 in cash, $75 in checks, a goodly amount of whisky «nd cigars, Talbod's saloon is at Ninth and Pa- cific streets, in the section known as “the bottoms.” The proprietor re- members two men who loitered about the place yesterday and to whom he refused a drink. Because of,the ex- cessive quantity of “soup” used, po- lice believe the job is the work of amateur crooks rather than expert cracksmen y There was no money in the cash drawer, which the burglars pried open. Entrance was gained to the store by means of a rear door, which was broken down. Bee Want Ads Produce Results. Phone Tyler 60. ON LIGHT CONTRACT City Council S8ets December b as Date Under the Refer- endum Law. HOWELL ENGINEERS DEAL By the adoption of a resolution of- fered by Mayor Dahlman, the city council set December 5 as the date for a special election to be held under the referendum law, the 'question to be whether the recent five-year street lighting contract granted to the Omaha Electric Light and Power company shall be sustained or re- jected. A statement was made at the coun- cil meeting that this election will cost the city between $6,000 and $7,000. The city clerk certified to the coun- cil that a referendum petition filed in his office contains sufficient signa- tures to comply with the referendum law, thus making it mandatory upon the council to call the special elec- tion, Engineered by Howell. This referendum petition was en- ginecred by General Manager How- cll of the municipal water plant. The petitions were distributed from Mr, Howell's office in the city hall and workers who circulated the petitions reported to this public office. Mr. Howell objects to the five-year contract because he maintains it in- terferes with his plans to go before the legislature this winter to secure passage of a bill authorizing the Met- ropolitan Water board of Omaha to go into the electric light and power business, using the Florence water plant for this purpose. 5 The city commissioners “take the position that this street lighting con- tract is the best solution of the situa- tion for the present and will not inter- fere with the city taking over by con- demnation the existing electric light and power plant any time the voters express themselves in a legal manner, Mr, Howell is fighting for a com- peting plant to be operated in connec- tion with the water plant HUGHES WOMEN SAY VICTORY IS SURE Noted Writers and Speakers After Touring Country Be- lieve Republicans to Win. GLAD HAND EVERYWHERE Their stop here transferred to Council Bluffs at the last moment, the Hughes Women's Alliance cam- paign train bearing noted women writers and speakers on a nation-wide tour, steamed through Omaha shortly before noon. Banners flying, flags waving and the name “Hughes” on every lip, the women went on to Council Bluffs, where a hearty recep- tion, gotten up on a scant two hours’ notice, greeted them. All the women expressed great disappointment that they were unable to stop in Omaha, Since the train arrived over an hour ahead of schedule, no Omaha women were at the depot to meet them. A Diplomat's Wife. “Qur trip has been one triumphal march for Hughes,” asserted Mrs. Nelson O'Shaughnessy, wife of 'the former United States charge d'af- faires in Mexico, and author of * periences of a Diplomat's Wife in Mexico,” a work strongly dgriding Feel Stuffy? Irritable? Dissatisfied? Your llver {s the cause, Clean out your system with Dr. King's New Life Plils. You will feel fine, 26c. All drugglsts.—Ady, President Wilson's Mexican policy. Mrs. O'Shaughnessy is a beautiful blonde woman with large blue eyes. She, together with Mary Antin, Dr. Katherine Bement Davis, Rheta Childe Dorr and Maud Howe Elliott, who have spoken in Omaha recently, were particularly disappointed that no stop could be made in Omaha. Wonderful Reception, “Our reception all over the country has been wonderful. We have untold Hughes friends in the west. Adverse press reports that we have not been well received are gross distortions of the truth,” said Miss Frances A. Kel- lor, chairman of the women’s com- mittee of the National Hughes alli- ance and formerly chief of the bureau of industrial and immigration work at New York, ) “This is no millionaires’ special. The funds for the campaign train were raised by dollar subscriptions mostly,” said Mrs. Q'Shaughnessy. “Just look at our clothes, just ordi- nary suits and hats. Do we look like millionaires? All of these women are women who work.” Outlook is Fine. Other than this grievance, the trainload were delighted with the out- look for the presidential campaign and with the pleasant time they had had on their long trip together.: All were merry and hxpfy as girls off on a lark—no display of temperament or eccentricities one might look for with women of such marked individuality living together for four weeks llreadg. News of Inez Milholland Boissevain’s breakdown brought expressions of sympathy from many who are her personal friends. 5 Mary Antin had picked up a regular western sombrero hat, which she wore, and in her mannish-tailored suit was a picturesque little figure. Mrs. Frank Dodson of the Des Moines reception committee met the train in Omaha and assisted the Coun- cil Bluffs committee, headed by Miss Caroline Dogdge and her sister, Mrs, Edgar Scott,\ of Omaha, in greeting the women. Newspaper Women. Four New York newspaper women are onfithe campaign trip. They are Mis§ Miriam Teichner of the Globe, a cousin of Mrs. Arthur Brandeis and Hubert Sloman of Omaha; Miss Martha Coman of the Herald; Miss Mary Ross of the World, and Miss Ernestine Evans of the Tribune. Other speakers on the in are Mrs. Frank Mebane, chairman of North and South Carolina division of the National Civic Federation and leader in philanthropic movements, Mrs. Alice S. Burke, former chair- man Seventeenth Assembly district, xéntioml progressive party, New York William Curtis Demorest, New York City; first vice president Diet Kitchen association, Milk kitchen, honorary president guild of medical college = and hospital for women. On board of nun‘veu St Luke's Home for Indigent Women. Miss Elizabeth Freeman, New York City; officer of National Association fclvr the Advancement of Colored Peo- ple. Miss Rita Kissen, lecturer for the New York Board of Education. Mrs. Noble Prentiss, wife of former editor of Kan Star, Mrs. Raymond Robins, 1l.; president of National Woman's Trade Union league, Mrs. Edith Ellicott Smith, president Rural Progress association of Pennsylvania, left the train yesterday, @Girl Risks Her Life To Save Pet Kitten, ' Workman Saves Her In an effort to save her kitten which fell into Carter lake near Munici- pal beach, 5-year-old Margaret Den- nis of East Omaha came near drown- ing. She was rescued by George El- lis, a laborer of the city dump, and revived by him. The kitten swam to shore, and both mistress and pet are doing well. Tourist Horse Makes Hurry Call at Union Station A runaway horse belonging to Wal- ter Saunders, Fourth and Jones street, created excitement when it dashed up the tracks of the Union station and succeeded in dumping a truck of bag- gage before it was cornered. The horse became frightened at a news- aper that was blown from the street into his face.
