R, Yangco 0f the Philippines “American capitalists are making a great mistake in not visiting the Phil- ippines more than they do,” said Theodore R. Yangco, prominent Filipino financier and president of many banks and corporations in Ma- nila, in his brief address to the Com- mercial club at noon yesterday. He declared that the business op- portunities, and opportunities for de- velopment of big industries in the Philippines are far beyond the dreams of the average American business man. In speaking of the advancement made in the Philippines recently, he said, “the United States has done more for the Philippines in eighteen years than Spain did in 365 years.” Mr. Yangco is in America on a pleasure trip. He is 54 years old. He was educated in Spain and London. Thirty years ago he passed through Omaha on his way to the islands from London, where he had been studying. Licutenant Jarvis Hope |s detalled by the United States naval bourd to investigata and report his findings on the invention of Dr. Ralph Burke, which serves to bring the submarine to w state of perfection. The llnutenant wrrives at Valdavia and is wel- comoed by the inventor und his daughter, Cleo. On the trial trip of the Inventor's boat, a Jupanese helper rised in the act of examining the m of the ven- tlating dovice Hope reports avorably on the new device, but there are others inter- osted In it An attempt to burglarize Dr. Burke's laboratory fails, but later Cleo finds him murdered fn his bedroom. Cleo sells her father's library to gat money: later she on to the mountain-high waves which were roaring down upon them. Small wonder then that Hope and Moris- sey, their every nerve strained to the task of keeping the boat from being swamped, failed to notice the other launch which ran under the lee of the lighthouse barely ten minutes after their departure. Out of it scrambled Mahlin and Satsuma. Clambering up the rocky footpath they reached the keeper's modest dwelling. ‘Can_you tell me where I can find a Mr. Fitzmaurise?” inquired Mahlin “They told me at the offices of the coast survey that he was at work over here making some maps or some- thing."” “Fitzmaurice seems to've become mighty popular all of a sudden,” re- marked the keeper. “You're the sec- ond party in half an hour that's been after him. He ain't here, though. He left this morning for Middle island.” “Has Lieutenant Hope been here looking for him?” hazarded Mahlin. “That's the name he gave,” said the keeper. “And's he's gone over to Middle isl- and?" “He has, though I did my best to discourage him. It's lucky for them they've got this light to guide them. Without it, on such a night as this, they wouldn’t have a chance in a million.” “Well, I'm not going to risk it," of the By E. Alexander Powell 16 Submarine in Flanders,” “The Road to Glory,” “Vive la Copyright, 1916, by E. Alexander Powell. | said Mahlin. “That’s certain. But I'm afraid you'll have to put up us for the night. I'll be glad to pay you for your trouble,” “I'm afraid I can't make you very comfortable,” said the keeper, “but | I'Il give you the best I've got. I have | to be up all night tending the light, 50 you can take my bed, and your friend there can sleep in my assist- ant’s room, and I'll fix up a bunk for your boatman in the storeroom.” I “You're not alone here, are you? | inquired Mahlin, | ,'T am tonight,” was the answer. “I've got an assistant, but he's been ‘frchng poorly of late, so he went over [to the city on the tender this morn- | ng to see a doctor. , . Now, just make yourselves at home, please, | I've got to go up to the light for a few minutes. With such a gale as | this blowing we can't take any chanc- | es of anything going wrong with the light-—there are too many lives de- pendent on it." But not on that night, nor for many nights thereafter, did Keeper | James Fairweather ascend the wind- |ing stairs leading to the great light which, far above them, sent its guid- |ing rays out over the angry waters, tor, as he turned to leave the room, a terrific blow descended on his skull and he knew nothing more, “Now, Satsuma,” called Mahlin, dragging the keeper's limp body from the door which led to the tower, “out with the Iighfl". - * Before he had left the lighthouse half a mile behind. Hope was bitterly reproaching himself for his foolhardi- ness in attempting to make the cross-' ing to Middle island, for the wina haa risen until it was sister to a cyclone and they had all that they could do to keep the little launch, already partiy filled with water, from being cap- sized by the mighty combers which broke over it. But they struggled doggedly on, knowing that they need have no fear of rocks so long as they kept squarely astern the light which svinked so encouragingly at them from Southeast island. Suddenly Morissey gave a cry of alarm. “The light, sir!” he gasped. “It's gone out!” He was right; the life-saving bea- con had been suddenly extinguished. In vain they searched the darkness for it. It did not reappear. At that moment, from somewhere to the eastward of them, a sudden fiery glow, incredibly dazzling, illu- minated, for a brief moment, angry sea and inky sky, and to their ears came, an instant later, a crash like an exploding powder mill. F. Maren of Chicago, official of the Cunard line of ocean steamers, is in the city for a short time and sees little prospect of any great amount of passenger traffic between the United States and Europe in the near future. According to Mr. Maren, practically all of the boats of the Cunard line have been impressed into the hospital or transport business and there are few left to handle passengers, even if there were any traveling. The Cunard company has com- menced laying the keels of eight im- mense ocean steamers, but they will not be ready for commission inside of a year. Day, may be ull right in the proper place, but a court room on a hot day is one place where these two usual elements of litigation can be discarded. “You gentlemen take off your coats, if you like. I'm going to take off mine,” exclaimed the court after watching the lawyers sweat through their coats while at work. Other courts now operating will probably follow suit.
